Hi,

I left employment with a company in April, of which up until then I had been working remote as per the employer's policy on the run up to and during the first part of lockdown.

I was advised that they would arrange for collection of the equipment (e.g. phone, laptop etc) shortly after my employment ended. Nothing came through, so I emailed at the start of May requesting what the arrangement would be. I was advised that as offices were shut there would be no one to receive the equipment, and they would be in touch once the offices had been opened again. I know that the offices have been open in some capacity for several weeks, but also know the company has had to make redundancies as a consequence of the economic impact.

Is there a statutory time limit for them to request this equipment be returned or do I have to leave it sat in the corner forever more?

Thanks,

DiscoSINGH

I don't about a statutory time limit for your ex-employer to collect their IT equipment - maybe you should write (or email them?) advising them they have 30 days to collect their IT equipment from you and see what their response is? I wouldn't eBay their IT equipment, that will open up a whole new can of worms for you.

It'd cost about £7 to send it to them? (assuming they are in the UK)

Is it hugely bulky?

It sounds as though you only worked remotely during lockdown, so worked at the office prior to that. Why not just drop it back there and be done with it?

It is likely to be easier to simply inform them if they have not been collected by X date you will courier them to Y person/address.

I would have thought this was the easiest approach - it gets the stuff out of the way and back to its' owner.

Apologies for being cynical but given how straightforward the solution is I sometimes wonder if the real question is "How long before I'm legally entitled to flog these on Ebay"......

I had this a while ago, ended up sending a message on linkedin to the HR director, as they had been ignoring my emails I did ask her if I could keep it.. funnly enough within hours I got a message from one of those who should have collected it asking when they could arrange shipping

I've had a laptop, since my contract finished in May. It was lent to me by my client, but actually belongs to thier client.

Unfortunately both organisations are 110 miles away, so i have said, if they wish to organise it, I will find a box and ship it back to them. They have agreed twice, and have done nothing. I understand they are making 9000 redundant so may have a few spare lap tops.

I think I would conclude that after 6 months your previous employer could not give a monkey's wk about you keeping their laptop and moby.

Give them 14 days to uplift before you start charging them for storage.
If they dont pay the storage fee after a reasonable period sell it to cover the cost and return the balance to them if it hasnt been fully assigned to storage costs.

Either:-
1. Ebay to flog said equipment
2. Courier to ship said equipment back...

I always thought that whenever you stop working for a company you can keep something as a leaving present anyway ? A laptop is maybe going a little far, but it's not unheard of !
