I currently work in sales/account management in b2b financial services.

I enjoy the challenge and buzz of dealing with customers and making new sales but have a nagging feeling that I am increasingly working in a very mature and commoditised market. There isn't a lot of differentiation or innovation in my industry so it can be a bit of a 1 dimensional sale.

What markets are the most rewarding and fulfilling (from a financial, innovation and value add perspective) to be working in sales?

I am assuming more innovative tech areas like cyber security and data analytics?

I continue to be heavily involved with analytics sales. It's a good place to be as so many places are starting to see the advantage of it.

From an employment perspective, you have a very wide arena in which to operate, from selling Watson, which is IBM's offering, right down to something like Formisimo, which is a Salford Quays startup with, at last count, 8 staff.

I would be happy to facilitate some introductions, if you're serious in taking the plunge.

I work in cyber security, counter terrorism and intelligence / counter intelligence, running a small team chartered to sell our products and solutions to new clients in emerging markets in Asia, Middle East and Latin America.

We have some incredible products and services that mean the difference between life and death for the end users.

The travel schedule can be absolutely punishing. We are lucky in that we normally fly up front, but it really makes very little difference - you still spend much of your life jet lagged beyond being tired and trying remember where your next flight goes from / to!

Some of the use cases that we get brought into are absolutely fascinating. However, equally, we are occasionally commoditised in our core markets and the sales cycle can be frustratingly slow. Particularly when dealing with the procurement policies of foreign governments, combined with UK export licensing etc.

To answer your question directly though, OP, the best product / service to sell is the one that you have a real passion for and can bring to life for the client. After that, it’s up to you to negotiate a commission structure that compensates accordingly.
