Pulling a sickie at work.

To be honest I haven't don't this for years because it impacts on other workers and I'm left with shed loads of work when I get back.
I do seem to remember pulling a sickie about 20 years ago to go drinking with my mates one day never got caught. About 10 years ago my line manager called in sick and I went straight to ASDA (sorry Harrods) after work and guess who was there shopping, no words were spoken it was just a silent understanding.
Where I work (Local Government Service) it seems all too easy thou, want a week off just fill in the Self Certification Form no Drs note needed bingo an extra weeks leave every year. Also the amount of women that have been off for 6 months only to make a recovery when the sick pay stops is unreal.

What have you gotten up to when off sick or tell us about that guy in work that always seems to be off but never gets sacked.

One of my staff called in sick dropping the rest of us right in it one weekend, at home on the Sat evening watching Glastonbury and lo and behold there he was on the screen with his girlfriend on his shoulders, he got fired when he came in with his self-cert on the following Tuesday.
Not so much a sickie, but used to try and knock off early on a Friday, usually was driving back from a client site and would head home an hour or two early.
Had a colleague who would call in sick pretty often, all came to a head when our team leader was sat at some traffic lights next to him 20 minutes after calling and claiming he was too sick to drive. Madly he tried to pretend it wasn't him, wouldn't look over, eyes ahead despite knowing he was busted.

A girl from work called in with a migraine on a Thursday which hadn't improved on Friday.
It mysteriously cleared up enough for her to go to a swedish house mafia concert on Saturday night (confirmed by colleague and Facebook) but the migraine was back on Monday
When she came back on Tuesday she was questioned about this and immediately claimed she was being harrassed and forced out of the company. She left about 2 months later

On a variation on the me nan's died - what again? That's the fourth time this year! scam, we had a guy well known for chucking sickies & coming in the day after with bags full of cheap fags for sale. He was finally undone when he claimed to need a day off as his son was having an operation - transpired he had two daughters. That was in the warehouse of a well known ethical retailer whose legal people were very sensitive about getting in the papers for anything, thereby creating a lead swingers paradise where the piss was widely taken.
I've only had to do it when my pre booked leave with activities organised and already paid was cancelled at short notice because someone with a child needed time off (child wasn't ill). I believe in fair treatment so I took action. I wouldn't do it as a rule though as it is not right.
There are a good number of people (usually women but I try not to generalise) who miraculously only get ill on Fridays and Mondays.

We had a lad working for us a few years ago who was an utter nightmare, it made we wonder when his Dad rang in sick for him one day & said 'he's not malingering this time', it all started to make sense over the next few weeks.
Turned out he had been just as bad in previous Companies, our mistake for not seeking references, lesson learned.
A client of mine had a bloke working as a DJ while being off full time work due to illness, took legal advice to be told there was nothing he could do about it as the 2 jobs were different & he may be able to perform one, but not necessarily the other

That reminds me, my last company (usual 9-5, 5 days a week) thought the same and decided to take some action. They did some sums and got everyone into a meeting and proudly announced they had worked out that 38% of illness was on a Monday or Friday thereby giving people a long weekend so these people must be taking the mick...I don't think I've ever pulled a sickie, the last time I was off was the day after my day off, about a year ago, before that was when my dad died and before that was probably 7 or 8 years prior.
I had some bug thing on my day off, I was literally farting and following through and the other end too, it went on for 24 hrs, I was exhausted, it had cleared up by the time I was due back in but I needed a day to recharge, so called in sick.
I hate having time off work as I know how much it impacts everyone else, I hate people who take the piss and take sickies, fortunately where I work, the majority are of the same thought process, however there are a couple of mechanics who occasionally are sick at the end of the month; only when they have achieved their hours bonus target though!!

Only once. Had been offered a job and they wanted an immediate start. I agreed. I had a course booked for a single day the following week. Cancelled the course and pleaded to get rebooked on the next one the following month.
Told my manager about the situation and he came back and said he was unable to allow me to go as I would have only accrued 0.9 of a leave day to that date.
He wasn't the most popular of managers.

The best one I've heard about was a story from one of my team at a previous company. Some bloke rang in sick and was later spotted on TV handing out a trophy at Newcastle racecourse to one of the winning jockey's. Managed to get tickets to some VIP day and decided not to take annual leave for it.

I'd say they were 100% right... but only in 60% of casesI once got myself into a bit of a tricky mess with HR after I had advance marked a certain employees sick days on the holiday planner...
To be fair though, I had predicted her first 6 days of the year correctly - the same weekends she took "sick" for the last couple of years that coincided with her birthday, her parents anniversary and a couple of bank holidays.
It seems that finding patterns in sick days is not the done thing in that PC corporate environment..

I had a (new) field based chap who rang in to say his father had died and obviously wouldn't make it to the office for a weeks, but didn't want any time off etc - fair enough.
2 months later I let him go for various reasons, a few days after I got a call on his work mobile from...... his father.

OR am I completely missing the point?
A total waster of air who was a partner of a brother in law strung the council on for over a couple of years with constant sickness periods.
She was only sick in the head but the council let her get away with it. Finally they retired her on ill health and my BIL kicked her out, so she stayed with a freind for a while, slept with her husband.
