Graduate role

Hi,

I'm not sure where to start. I completed my degree ( Electrical Power Engineering) in 2016 and still looking for a graduate role. I have applied to many jobs in the last year and attended a fair amount of interviews, some have went well (for me) but I still get rejected and no feedback is given.

Can anyone offer some advice on the best way I can get into the engineering sector?

I don't mind doing voluntary if its around Glasgow.

Have your CV polished by a CV writing service, just to make sure that its doing its job for you.

Then you should try to get involved in something to fill your time that will look good on your CV, ideally something related to your career to be. This will make answering the "tell me what you have been up to since you graduated" type questions much easier too!

Could you join one of the services in a relevant role?

What sector are you looking to work in? How flexible on location are you? what sort of role do you want?

My CV has been looked at by friends and family.

I am working atm but its not in relation to my degree and thats what I am having trouble with

Engineering sector, Anywhere around the UK, Graduate Engineer or anything that will give me experience.

Have you tried applying to all the rail construction companies, both Principal Contractors and small sub contractors (specialists)?

Huge amount of electrical rail work out there, everything from HV transmission down to 750v DC trackside and everything in between.

Also have you tried National Grid or UKPN or SSE (to name a few?)

I'm happy to take a look at your CV. I've been a mentor to Grads and Apprentices but have only been in industry 5 years myself. Might give you a new perspective.

Yes ive had a look at them.

Yes I have asked every company and most didn't get back to me, the one that did said I done well but the other person had the relevant experience, and this is what I think is the issue. No interview coaching but been helped by a few engineers for some tips

Don't mean to be facetious but this was literally the first when I googled electrical rail contractors:

I was talking more generally about small contractors in the engineering sector that offer graduate/ entry level roles, not in particular the rail industry but thanks for that!

You've still got to work on your spelling and grammar.

It's clear you don't see it as important...but it is!

This thread potentially puts you in touch with people who might know of openings, or know people they could put you in touch with, etc. Yet still your posts have spelling and grammatical errors.

When you put yourself in the shop window, this needs to be perfect. I appreciate many of the younger generation (of which I am one, incidentally) seem to think that the way they post in Facebook is fine everywhere else, but it isn't.

Sharpen that up and you'll get a lot further.

Ok but engineering is very broad.... there is manufacturing, power generation, transmission, rail, nuclear, O&G, mining, aeronautical, defence, I could go on. Where have you been applying, what are your interests?

I dont mind going into
- manufacturing
- power generation
-transmission
- rail

The subjects I really liked during university were the power subjects and would like to get into this industry (transmission/ generation / distribution )

Job wise the companys that I have applied to are:
- Michelin
- Babcock
- Schneider Electric
- Balfour Beatty
- Morrison Utility
- Omexcom
- Siemens
- Network Rail
- Uk Power Network
- GE

Alstom, Brush, Bechtel....... there are a lot of companies out there if you do your research.....

however given that you've already been through a fair few interviews, it's probably going to be more worthwhile to try to establish why you are not ticking the requirements. May be worth seeing if there is anybody who can help you with interviewing skills/technique though this will be best done face to face, rather than over the internet.

As others have pointed out, your written English is poor, and if your applications are in a similar style to this post then of course you won't be doing very well.

I know that a forum such as this is informal, but if you write this poorly here it suggests that you'll struggle with more formal communication too.

You need to get this fixed. Applying for a professional job is so much easier with good English. If it's not your first language then it's understandable, but you need to work on it.

I've.

I performed well, Or I did well.

I have been helped by a few engineers who gave me some tips.

If HR allowed a candidate in to see me with writing like yours, I'd not be angry with the candidate, I'd be angry with HR.

Apologies for mentioning it twice, but irrespective of the quality of your degree (is it a good one?) you're going to struggle unless someone helps you to improve your English.
