Evening,
will the letter accompany an application form? Or does your application have to all be done in this letter?

or is this still just expression of interest stage?

In brief: CV written in the third person outlining your competencies and impact. Cover letter written, succinctly, in the first person telling them why you should be hired.

Good luck!

Sorry, been away so couldn't reply easily. My ideas are below.

Yes, I would write it in 1st person.

Dear (manager's name if you know them)

please accept this letter as my application for the advertised Head of xxx role..... To support this application, I have attached my CV.

During my time at (your) company (or previous industry experience), I have built up a strong range of skills that I believe make me ready to progress to the Head of xxx role.

I feel I have the necessary qualifications and experience to perform this role, including
- experience of xxx (something technical, or the sector you're in)
- ability to manage yyy (ie staff, senior managers, customers, supplier relationships etc)
- a proven track record of (doing something else, eg problem solving, initiative, working above and beyond)

I welcome this opportunity to progress, and look forward to hearing from you.

yours sincerely (if named person)
