Getting agency work but no joy with full time job?
Discussion
Hey I am in the Oswestry/Wrexham/Shrewsbury area and I have been looking high and low for any type of work that is paid ok and full time work. So far I've only managed to use my HGV Class 2 for agency work which is irregular at best.
I don't mind agency work as it pays but working for a few different ones to make the week fill up increases your admin drastically with all the correlating paperwork for each one. I would be keen to do anything, office work, something hands on. Hell I even pumped flood water out the sewers for a few days and have occasionally been doing an overnighter to London and unloading 280 sheep carcasses by hand each weighing 40kg and driving back the same night for 100 pounds.
Im pretty much fed up of being drip fed work at the agencies leisure and they seem to blow hot and cold for work. Plus everytime you turn up as an agency driver there is a stigma to overcome that you're all s
te. I always turn up presentable, early and do the best job I can etc.
Really looking for some heads up or pointer here as I thought I knew it all 6 months ago before my foreign consultancy job went tits up. Just trying to make ends meet here in the UK and it's getting tiresome chasing people to pay you for the work you've carried out too. And pay you the rate they promised that's another bug bear.
Any thoughts or pointers most gratefully received as I'm all out.
I've applied for pretty much every job on indeed for a 20 mile radius.

I am in the same boat myself.I am a pipe fitter/mechanical fitter (two seperate jobs I know but can't be choosy these days).
I used to get two or three calls a week offering work but jobs have been harder and harder to find in the last few years. It is all due to companies having to tighten their belts and being unwilling to commit and offer a permanent job, this has forced more and more people into being sole traders on zero hour contracts.
You are right by saying that agency staff get a bad name but the stuff I see going on from some permanent staff is shocking, they know they are safe due to having more than two years in with the company and take the p''s whenever possible.
If I gave examples nobody would believe some of the things I have seen.
This is what I do (one small section of a job at a hospital,I changed a lot of it from the original drawing to save a lot of time and materials).

Can#t believe that a person with your skills can't be in a permanent job.I used to get two or three calls a week offering work but jobs have been harder and harder to find in the last few years. It is all due to companies having to tighten their belts and being unwilling to commit and offer a permanent job, this has forced more and more people into being sole traders on zero hour contracts.

When I had finished the last phase all the promises in the world were made regarding more work but nothing ever materialized. I even saved their foreman a major embarrassment when I spotted the huge mistake he had made.I did not make a big issue of it just showed him quietly what he had done wrong. Ah well.
