Health and safety jobs

Anyone on here work in health and safety positions?

I'm looking at a career change doing a health and safety role within the oil and gas industry based in Aberdeen. Currently studying my NEBOSH general certificate and I've tailored my CV. I'm a police officer at the moment so have a decent amount of transferable skills.

A lot of the jobs I've seen advertised are looking for candidates with previous experience. I obviously haven't worked in this field before.

How did any of you guys get your start? Are there any particular companies taking on inexperienced guys or any tips on how to gain some experience?

I guess you know what I'm going to say next! Of course you have worked in this field, it's just that you don't badge it H&S; you call it risk management! Of course, if you're looking to go testing plugs all day, then you've probably not done that (it want take you long to learn!). You've probably got more real world experience than most who transfer in to this sector. You do have key skills and experiences; you just need to recognise that, package yourself and your CV with that in mind, and then decide which bit if the 'risk' or H&S industry you want to be in. Sounds like you need this first:

NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety.

Also "PC parked in disabled spot shocker!"

I've been advised to just do the general certificate. The oil/gas qualification seems to be a new one and I've not spoken to or seen an advert asking for it. Suppose it wouldn't hurt though.

With regards to the other replies, I've tailored my cv to bring out my transferable skills.

I've heard that getting into this field is who you know as opposed to what you know, just wondering how anybody else got their start.

Why don't you speak to Nebosh about it - I'm sure they would be very helpful.
