Job for a Pistonhead?

Ok here we go.

I've been a bit confused with where to start my career.

I'm a massive Pistonhead but unfortunately due to being young (and therefore stupid) I've jumped about up until now. I always wanted to be a Motorsport technician but due to having a good job straight from college I never went for an apprenticeship.

With that in mind - here I am several years later and I want to start a lifelong career.

I've done various jobs from Personal Trainer to Stone Mason to Bar Manager but by far my favourite was working for myself doing Vinyl Wrapping. Unfortunately due to Rent etc I simply couldn't afford to have this as my only job and couldn't afford to throw money at advertising at the time.

Briefly got into car sales but none of the other exec's seem to like cars!

I keep up to date with all things car related online and try to get to any events I can and am fairly handy with the spanners and a camera!

Sooooooo seeing as I'm tired of being told I'm too old to do an apprenticeship and don't want to get into some office job I hate I thought I'd put out a plea on PH!

I'm 24, good work ethic and willing to start from the bottom and work up.

Thanks for the reply's I'm trying to get some more info on the apprenticeship as we speak!

I'm based in Oxfordshire but willing to travel so anywhere in Berks, Bucks or Oxon is fine possibly further if it's the right position!

I'd say get yourself to uni.

Currently a Vehicle Dynamics Engineer for JLR and also part time Race Engineer, get all the petrolhead fix I could wish for.

My path-

-Unrelated Work experience
-Motorsport Technology Foundation Degree (Lower entry reqs.)
-Worked for a TVR specialist during
-Final year at Oxford Brookes to turn the Foundation into a proper degree. Graduate with Performance Automotive and Motorsport Technology.
-Race engineer for the summer, then have my hand bitten off to work for JLR as a contractor(AFTER being rejected by their HR)

Cannot recommend it highly enough, I feel like I have a lot of options open to me now. Friends have gone into F1, other motorsport and manufacturer stuff.

The important thing with all of it seems to be to show passion, determination and initiative. And get as much experience as possible (even if it means working for free)

What an excellent comment to put on the end - it is those people that are prepared to get up at stupid o clock to support a race team, for no financial gain. the last person to work below me as an apprentice that showed that sort of effort went straight on to join McLaren
