I have been asked to complete a psychometric tests for a job I have applied for, which is a Director level role. I haven't done these since I was applying for jobs out of Uni over 10 years ago, any hints or tips to get through and how much are jobs weighted on these tests?

Weighting depends entirely on the job.

assessmentday.co.uk have tests that are generally harder than the actual tests used. Great job.

Generally numerical, verbal and diagrammatic. Find out which you'll be doing, and then just practice. For the numerical ones in particularly, concentrate on percentages and ratios and you're generally golden.

Although I haven't done any for myself, I've helped others on numerous occasions on web based ones for large multinational companies. Much as it goes against what HR are trying to achieve, I'd get someone else next to you who views things in a different light and complements your skills.

From experience, they seem to be a pass/fail type hurdle as opposed to anything meaningful.

There were analytical based questions (set of data, analyse and conclude type thing).
Pattern based - Look at the previous three iterations, what comes next?
English questions - Look at a text, answer whether a statement is true, false, cannot say.

Finally, if you don't know, don't guess!!!! The answer is not always 'C'.

If you can find some examples online then practice them until you can't take it any more. A few marks were dropped for silly mistakes in the analytical ones. All the ones I've done are pretty intense as you're against the clock. Good luck!

Are they "pure" psychometric tests (e.g. MBTI), or aptitude tests?

Not quite sure, it doesn't really say, although the website I have to do it on (it's online assessment), thomasinternational.net, has hints and tips and seems to mention aptitude tests a lot. Will try the websites listed and use the hints and tips on the host website to hopefully do a decent job. I think it's because I haven't done them in ages is the issue, practise, practise, practise is all I can do.

Caveat: I can't promise anything obviously, because these are quite personal.

However, for what it's worth - I am a 'Thomas International' trained psychometric tester (after a 3-day course at their London HQ) and hence subsequently in my managerial role, was the companies' recruiter, using Thomas PPA as part of our recruitment process.

Drop me a PM when you get 5, and I will try to help.

And just as an aside to your concerns so far - don't worry unduly about this, it's not as big or serious as you might think.

That's would be great, any help would be appreciated. Not worrying to be honest, just want to ensure I give the best account of myself as possible. Just need to work out how to send a PM on here!

The Thomas international tests are superb. Very accurate IMO. Absolutely nothing to be concerned about. I have done then numerous times both for companies during training programs and also for fun as my brother worked for Thomas for 5 years.

There is no right or wrong with them, seriously nothing to worry about.

Personally, after my experiences of psychometric tests I wont be bothering with any company that requires them as part of the application process.

I have been through them 3 times,

1st time I had a colleague - who was well known to me -do the psychometric test before we implemented it as part of the application weed-out process, the results were nothing short of bullst.

2nd time I went for a job which required the tests, did the tests, then had an face to face interview where the interviewer said "you are nothing like your test results" and then hired me

3rd time I went for a job (A job for which I am referred to by others as an expert in the field of this particular technology and job), I was told that I was not suitable as the analysis of the results had shown that I was unsuitable for the profile of the job.

I compete regularly with the company that I was applying to on the 3rd test and win the work from their customers 75% of the time. So IMO this shows that they are preventing the induction of an employee that could change the course of their company for the better but their candidate "profile" is not allowing them to?

Whatever happened to suitable references, qualifications, experience, and leadership qualities determined in a face to face conversation and backed up by external sources??

Good luck OP - I just hope your employers don't stifle their future by allowing these sort of tests to be the filter for candidates.

+1 for the Thomas tests. We used them and found them to be really good. I did the PPA and aptitude tests, and the results were very accurate. Main thing for the aptitude test is to find a quiet place, don't do it while tired, and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Thanks for all the help. I have completed the test which was a PPA (Personal Profile Analysis) which seems to a behavioural profile test. Apparently there is no right or wrong answer, but clearly its designed to produce a report. The organisation seeking candidates have of course the right behavioural profile they are looking for, if you are outside this i assume you ain't going to get the job.

As stated above not entirely sure I agree with the way they are doing it, fingers crossed.

Google "MBTI" and see if that's the sort of thing you had.

I had to do a "Situational Judgement Test" online a few weeks ago for a graduate position. Not sure if that will be part of your test. I think the gist of it was trying to determine how far you would go yourself to resolve a problem, rather than running for your manager for advice. I've always been told there's no such thing as a silly question, but I can see the need for someone that has some common sense that will deal with things there and then if they have the skills and confidence to do so, but also not to stick their oar in and make a bad situation worse.
I did a few practises on some different sites prior to the main one, results were all average or slightly above. I didn't get through to the next stage, so I may have over thought the questions by doing the practise runs.
