I'm having one of those days at work where I feel undervalued.

I made the mistake of casually looking at similar roles to mine on a few recruitment sites and have, again, confirmed I don't get paid enough for what I do. I'm currently doing a management role, with a team leader title, for a engineer's wage. I've mentioned this to my boss previously and he dangles the carrot of assuming his role when he retires in 3 years.

The thing is, I work for a big national company that has very little understanding of what we, as a specialised, sub-company do or appreciate. As our parent company is very 'sales' orientated, with very little understand of engineering. Hence they don't pay inline with a technical company. Their pay structure is very much based on 'sales targets' rather than graft and ingenuity.

Anyway, I digress.

So I've been looking at a few jobs that pay more inline with what I expect and could open up the kind of opportunities I seek. The issue is that I work in construction, which is very incestious. So any applicants for other positions will likely get flagged, especially if a recruiter is launching my CV around wildly.

I don't suppose there are anyways to combat this or will I just have to take the risk. I'm aware I can't be sacked for applying for other jobs, but I'd rather not make things awkward at work and approach my boss with this on my own terms.

Send your CV to a limited number of recruiters, by email, with a SPECIFIC instruction that they are NOT to release it without your consent in each case.

Sound advice, thanks.

I'm positive I know the answer to this one already, but I suppose amending my name until I've secured an interview is a big 'no no'...?

I wouldn't be bothered. You want more money, therefore applying for jobs. It's par for the course. If your current employer sees it, it's not grounds for dismissal but may actually buck their ideas up and offer you an incentive to stay.

So, I wouldn't worry and apply to everything you want.

An agency should never send your CV on without consulting you. There are some twunts who might do this but I have never come across it.

As said above, so what if you current place finds out? It will become more than obvious within a couple of days when you start ducking outside when your mobile rings! Then there is the times you are off the reservation or booking random days leave for interviews etc.

Good luck.

ETA - Whatever you do, don't change your name on your CV to avoid detection. Whole load of problems that will lead to.

The CV you send to a recruiter will not be what they release to their clients. They remove names and specifics to prevent identification.

Some do and some don't, however as i explain to every recruiter I talk to, I insist on a decent job description so I can tailor my CV to the role, that way I know where my CV is going.

Speaking as someone whose wife is currently dealing with recruitment agency's I wouldn't trust them to boil the kettle, biggest load of unprofessional muppets we have ever dealt with.

Sorry to any guys on here who do it, just speaking from our experience .
