Hi, just after a bit of advice, I have recently come out of the police and looking for a career offshore. Not sure if anyone is aware I any agencies in the Aberdeen area that can offer advice on what my best options are with my skills and qualifications and any courses that would be worth my while doing! What is it you want to do offshore, welder/rigger/Inspection/engineer/corrosion/production/instrumentation/diver/ROV/surveyor/driller/catering/laundry/mechanic/safety, the list is endless. johnfm said:

yes - because there's lots of these multimillion pound helicopters sitting around idle isn't there??(offshore worker delayed offshore and pissed off at the whole situation here)
Joking aside my dads a arline pilot and have considered becoming a hicopter pilot in the past but it's a lt of money with no guarantee of a start at the end of training! Well I have left the police and now unsure what would be my best route in, I didn well at school and got lots of Highers and adv higher in physics but no qualifications since. I'm considering doing my dive course, although I know its hard to get work initially the rewards can be high if you make a name for yourself! I'm based in Aberdeen so ideally situated.

Coming out of the Police you should be well trained on Health and Safety (I believe). We are living in 21st century Britain, everything is about H&S. Sometimes I don't know how I managed to get to my age without H&S 30/40 years ago.If you do have some H&S qualifications, look at a company called Survivex based in Aberdeen. They do BOSIET (Survival offshore course) you will need this one for any position if you wanna go offshore. It is about 600 quid but no one will consider you without it.

You need to start working in an office in Aberdeen / Hull or similar, and even then there is no guarantee of getting anywhere near a rig without production / drilling experience.

This could be the case and perhaps you are 100% correct. Yeah I know a few police officers that have gone the health and safety route but not sure if it is for me. I'm very tempted with diving however some people say don't go near it, while others say its going to boom in future and a lot of the current divers are near recruitment age. The Scottish government also put a grant into training divers last year so there must be a reason for this

but you have nothing to offer the diving industry UNLESS you are v qualified in what they want
anyone can get wet - its the job you do when you reach the worksite what counts.
you will be wasting your money on training unless you have some thing special to bring to the party.

Yeah I appreciate that about what I have to offer, but what does anyone have to offer? I know they class diving as just a way to get to the job site but surely the skills underwater are a lot different to being on the surface? Speaking to people a lot of people have had starts offshore diving with no previous experience but maybe they are just lucky! What skills would you say is important before doing a diving course?

honestly almost ANYONE can do a diving course and the schools will love to take your money!
its a world wide industry , you will not just be competing against brits for work but from everyone who has the tickets and experience already , worldwide.
you may be best off calling a few dive companies in aberdeen or if local call in and have a chat &
see what they think - but the fact remains if you are not a qualified and experience mechanical engineer/welder/weld inspector/welder
keep your money in your pocket as you will be only wasting it - unless you know someone on the job who is guaranteeing you a start.
good luck if you do go for it but prepared to be disappointed

Ok thanks a lot for your help, just one quick question when you say welder what qualification are they after? I see ASW D3.6M seems to be the standard underwater ticket? This seems relatively easy to obtain however could be wrong.
I may be quite nieve in thinking wedding on shore would be totally different I welding underwater and a lot of the knowledge/skills would not be transferable
