Just a bit of background information, I am 20 years old, and I had a 6 month contract at a company after already completing a 12 month apprenticeship for the same company. My contract is due to finish at the end of the month. They were making the right noises, perhaps even gave me false hope for a job at the end of it, etc etc. I was told they will not be renewing my contract, however if I want to, I can have a zero-hour contract until the end of September.

Now, I have just finished my Level 3 NVQ apprenticeship in business admin, but I really want to get into IT. The only problem is, I don't have any IT qualifications and I really don't want to do another apprenticeship all over again.

Does anyone have any thought or advice? I'm really stumped and I don't know where to go know with my career.

Sorry to hear that, disappointing news for you.

What was your role in that company ? What work were you doing.

Have you asked them if they would consider you for an IT role ? Are they hiring in that area.

Do you know why they really aren't renewing you, lack of budget, or are you not quite up to mustard ? (Sorry to be brutal but you need to consider whether you are doing enough of the right things)

Finally if you really want to get into IT, you need to define which bit - IT is a big area. Support, Coding, specialist applications, writing apps or what ?

I was working at a school in student services, doing general admin / reception work. The reason they are not renewing is because they want to take on another apprentice instead - they have a habit of doing this to all of their old apprentices in all other departments so it was nothing unexpected or out of the ordinary! (I should have known better and tried to find a job before my contract came to an end)

I have asked persistently for a role in IT, and over the summer once the pupils had gone, I was allowed to join the IT team for a bit of work experience. A role for a trainee IT technician came up a couple of weeks ago which I obviously, but as the manager is out until after my contract has ended and a decision will not be made until they are back, I really cant pin my hopes on that.

Ideally I would like to get into IT support, before perhaps specializing in Cisco.

Thanks for your help
