Mobile phones banned from work/office, common ?

The other half has just started a new job & on the first day was told that she was not allowed to have a mobile phone on her at work & would be subject to random search's to check,if she had one it would have to be kept in her car, bit of a problem when she gets dropped off & doesn't drive in !
One of the other women in the office said she had been searched twice in the past few months, so they do enforce it.
The company is just an ordinary office workplace with no secrets or sensitive material around, so it seems a little draconian, or is it more common than we would think ?

As for not using the phone, that seems fair enough to me - she is there to work not call/text her friends.... However during her breaks there seems to be no reason for her not to.

She doesn't disagree about there to work, in fact she is so busy she has to have lunch at her desk while working, its just after 15 years of having a mobile on her at previous jobs for personal contact, its come as a bit of a shock.
I wish they did this in our office. The women are never off their phones and never get any actual work done. Phones are banned from other area's of the site so I don't know why not our office! We have direct lines to landline phones in there so its not like we can't be contacted in the event of emergency either! 
There's an office in Brisol that i occasionally have to visit which has a similar rule - No mobiles. Each member of staff gets their own landline and that's it.
Rule does not apply to company phones though. You should see the reaction i get receiving calls while i'm working there, half the office stop what they're doing to turn around and stare.

Agree with OP - it does seem overly petty to ban having a mobile in your coat/trousers pocket.
Banning people from talking on/using personal mobiles during work time is fine. Banning you from having mobiles on you full stop is overly petty.
Have had the normal can't use a mobile during work time rules before - but nothing to say you couldn't have a phone in your pocket.

I have been to many work places where mobiles are banned and you have to leave them with security. The reason being that most phones have a camera and they don't want pictures being taken.
Remember, in the 60's a spy would have to hide the spy camera in his shoe. Today we can all have cameras on our person and not raise eyebrows.
Could the restriction be for corporate secrecy?

It sounds like they don't treat their workforce like adults......
Do they keep a list of people who go to the toilet more than twice a day ?
Personally I don't care how long my Team are on the phone or searching the web, I pay on results not on time, fail to deliver

Searches outside of manufacturing / warehousing / distribution settings are a little odd, unless somewhere does deal with genuinely sensitive info One of the other women in the office said she had been searched twice in the past few months, so they do enforce it.

Restrictions / bans on the use of personal mobiles are quite common - although i'm not aware of anywhere that actually goes through on threats assuming people's phones are off ... personal phone (mis)use is a huge productivity killer.
I can think of a few sites were the outright ban on personal mobiles ( and anything slse electrical not expressedly approved for use on site) is very much a safety one but these are COMAH sites / military sites with lots of ammunition or buckets of sunshine and it's about 'Intrinsic safety' etc...

Indeed! And if it's a security issue, well, don't they trust their own employees? Nice atmosphere.Do they keep a list of people who go to the toilet more than twice a day ?
