So I may have this what I would call an opportunity of a lifetime to head a project. The basic salary alone would dwarf anything i have earned so far in my life put together plus a chance at bonuses and in 3-5 years I could retire still in my thirties. This is all still just a chance, but I need to give the would be employer an answer in two weeks time.

The problem is, it's abroad and I would have to spend at least 50% of my time there. My wife does not even want to listen long enough to hear the above...

The alternative. Made redundant end of July with a 100 others, enough savings to last me till Feb 2013 and interviews are few and far between with another 99 "competitors" looking fo the same job...

Go for it. You only live once. A few years in another country for early retirement is surely a price worth paying?

Take the job.

Wife will have to understand that savings do not last forever and you are providing for her future.

That's well put and she is now coming round to the idea! Told her let's get a firm offer and have the option to just not go, rather than simply decline.

Go, tell your wife to deal with it, but maybe don't word it like that! Your going to be able to retire 30 years early FFS.

Well normally I will say family first but looking at your alternative scenario I'd say go for it!

I'd be inclined to try and talk wifey round - what's three years of over-seas complications when weighed against retirement in three-five years?!

What are her reasons for not listening/not wanting it?

It seems like a dead-cert that you'd regret not going. Especially in 6 years time... "I could be retired by now. <stabs wife in face>"

If you only have enough savings to last you 6 months out of work, how can you possibly retire after 3-5 years in this new job?

This doesn't seem to stack up.... they must be offering you massive multiples of what you're on right now. So much so that it was crazy to even make this thread, you should already have said yes and filed for divorce.

C'mon isee, for those returns it's either your life that's at risk, your liberty or your ringpiece. Which is it?

Friend of mine is currently in a similar situtation. He wants to work abroad for about 2 years tops, clear his mortgage and then work 3 days a week and retire early, his missus is having none of it, even thou she agrees with his long term plans for their future......

Strange breed.

Oh and ill tell you what ive told him. GO!!!!

You will need a hell of a lot of money to see you through the next possibly fifty odd years (if you live that long)........

Plus divorces are expensive....biggrin

About the "lifetime opportunity"...

...are you sure you will get that kind of return? Or is it possible that the employer is using that as a bait?

This.

OP you have already recognised the market for whatever you do is very competitive, and you're not getting many interviews.

With no offence intended, you do have to wonder why they would pay so hoghly in a saturated market, and why ghey would target you ehen others wont give you an interview.

This again. Too good to be true etc.
