academic career with/or to a car related job?

Hi all,
i've read these forums for ages and have finally thought to start contributing.
i've had a very lucky career so far, spending only 2 weeks out of work since finishing a masters at uni in 2009. I have been in the same job now for 2.5 years and have always been applying for other roles since i started, as thought i would only be here for 4 months! however I have suffered from depression for the past 10 months and have been advised to be signed off work, whist i find another job. however i have stuck with it as i don't want to have that on my record. having had my first interview in 2.5 years and been turned down, i really have been thinking about packing it in and switching careers. (i'm fully aware that i'm very fortunate to be in a position of having an job in the first place).
my background is environment/energy research whilst i love it, my actual job requires me to do events/workshops in that sector (i'm really not that bothered if Mr Smith is a vegetarian anymore).
Motorsport has been a passion of mine since I saw Damon Hill becoming World Champion in 96. of course i'm not going to be a racing driver - that will be left to games consoles and my dreams, but does anyone no of any random careers that perhaps are easy for someone with no engineering background at all to get into?
I love driving, to the extent i offer to do as much as possible between me and my partner, i cant explain why, i just do (whether its hyper milling in our Kia Rio, or having a bit of fun in our temporally leased Mini One Clubman)
Trade plates are poor pay, and i've only had a license for 1 year (i'm 25) so i doubt there are many driving jobs i would be elegible for.
are there any motorsport/car manufactors jobs/ that perhaps like to have a sector looking at energy use/environmental sustainability? i'm open to anything as i would just like to know what is out there, as sometimes other peoples opinions can really open up your mind!
my partner doesn't want me to change careers drastically and take a massive pay cut however ive not made much progress getting healther myself, we are getting hitched next year and ive wanted to be off the tablets as a main goal, and nearly everyone is saying a new job (and perhaps new career) is the way to go.
i even thought about buying a used car, doing it up, and selling it - by doing it up i mean pretty much cleaning it/changing oil and sell it quickly just seeing if i could brake even before i actually started getting into any major maintenance - as that would take a long time to do!
any advice or inspiration would be much appreciated
