mining investments/ investment banking career options

I'm a specialist mining engineer, used to dealing with production risks and categorising them for decision making. Some experience with feasibility type works, but mostly operating environments. I've been wondering about using my skills to venture into investment markets - perhaps as a resource for investment personnel (rather than becoming an investment banker myself). Thing is I'm not really sure how (if at all) my skills would be applicable. Has anyone made a similar/ comparable leap?
