Job that fits around school hours?
Discussion
Time to pick the collective brains please
I've spent the last 14 years doing a selection of part time unsocial hours jobs due to childcare commitments . Current role as part time supervisor for last 8 years in a call centre .
Youngest child off to school in September so I have the chance to get some sort of life back .
What I need to find is a role that works around school hours . Will work weekends if I need to - just not every single one as I do now . I've approached current employer to change hours but they wont play ball so I'm after inspiration .
I'm not fussy but I can't maintain current standards below £200 a week (not a lot , I know but I'm able to squeeze every penny) any suggestions ? I can do call centres, customer service , e commerce , general admin etc . Over to you

The civil service generally offer pretty flexible working patterns. Vast range of jobs - admin, customer-facing, call centres etc. as well as more specialist stuff. Not exactly a boom industry at the moment, but there are some opportunities about. jobs.civilservice.gov.uk

My partner is in the same boat as you at the moment, and good luck is all I can say, as its bloody hard to find anything other than working in a school!!
Unless it's the same school, not sure how that helps?Mrs Cjelli is a teacher, and works 15-20 minutes away. Sons school is 2 minutes away. She has to be in to set up and stuff, so leaves about 7:45. He doesn't have to be there till 8:45 at the earliest. Not to mention working past school finishing time in meetings/planning etc.
The upshot being, we still need some form of child care for the first and last hours of the day.
Not an unusual challenge, but one where compromise is needed in bucketfuls if you want to drop off and pick up yourself. As mentioned earlier, working from home/self employment is usually the solution. Taking on a role that you can complete without rigid hours but is more outcomes based is your goal. They are out there, but often have fixed, limited income limits due to the high demand for them. Internet searches will throw up both home working job opportunities and some rules from government sites. Good luck!
I would love to work for myself , I just can't figure out how my skills / experience translates into a commodity that I can sell ? What I am skilled at and employed to do more than anything else is diplomacy . I can placate irate customers and can get decent work from the unwilling ! What does that make me ?

You sound like a teacher! What are you like with numbers? I retrained as a book-keeper when I left work to have kids and then picked up some self-employed work (from home). Great if you require flexibility and there are quite a few small businesses who need someone for anything between a day a month and full-time.

Sorry to hijack the thread but this interests me. May I ask where you did your training and if there are any qualifications needed?Edited by Mrs BlueCerbera on Tuesday 24th July 15:27
