PDF CV - but recipient wants in Word?

As title really. Relates to a recruitment agency.
Two questions in one. But please note that this is not the specific CV for a known role, this is purely a generic one. If a role comes up I will expect and have advised that a tailored CV will be provided - i.e. this generic one is not to be more widely published.
If they want it in Word.....Why? And - whilst realising that even in .pdf they can change it - I have had my share of meeting a final recipient only to find a recruitment agency thought of a better CV for me without telling me! - what do you do to protect a CV?

We used a system called 'Voyager' for all our IT.
It had keyword search intelligence, but to use it a CV had to be copied and pasted into it's own window within the software. Hence, we couldn't do that with a PDF.
CV's were never altered, changed or modified.

I always ask for Word format because we need to remove contact and personal details before sending to a client. I can't speak for other agents but I would never alter the substance of the CV as it is more likely to trip you up in the interview if you don't know what CV you're interviewing against, and it wouldn't give my client a fair representation of your own take on your career to date. Very silly! That said, I'm sure it's happened.
They will always want to edit out your contact details (normally replaced with the agency details) so that a sneaky interviewer couldn't contact you directly and cut out the agency. They'll also want it put into their databases.
I've had them edit my CV before, even to the point of fabricating experience I didn't have. Not a lot you can do about that, beyond making it very clear that you don't want them doing it. I always take my own copy of my CV to interviews too.

Request a copy of the modified Word doc before they start sending it out if they intend to remove your contact details and add their own. You'd be amazed at how poorly they may modify things and turn what was a beautifully presented CV in to something you wouldn't want to be associated with.
Your CV could be the first thing a potential employer sees of you - make sure it remains well presented once they've tinkered.
