Hi,

I'm currently trying to recruit an asp.net developer but on principle I really, really don't want to go through an agency!

We've advertised on CWJOBS ( http://www.cwjobs.co.uk/JobSearch/JobDetails.aspx?...) but have had practically no applications of any worth - less than 5! All the jobsites just seem to be full of adverts posted by agencies. I think it's reasonable terms, we have a bonus scheme giving potentially £5K per annum, 7% pension, parking on site etc. etc.

So how can we get a candidate, I refuse to give in and go with an agency, looking at 'jobsite' it just seems the same as CWJOBS, full of agency postings.

Looks like I'll be headed down to the reception of Manchester University Computer Sciences department with a billboard at this rate, probably have a better rate of success!

Thanks in advance for ideas!

Rob.

Linkedin?

Edit to add, these chaps have plenty of choice of who to work for, so you need to be on the ball to snag one!

I guess it is because the salary being offered is quite poor and you are asking for several years of experience.

Or not mentioned the salary at all so that prospective candidates assume that it is low.

Go on, I'll bite. Why do you refuse to "give in" and go with an agency? wink

Considering the junior one at the bottom of the page (the one that people who read this page also read) was £22000 - £25000 for 6 months experiance

Ideally you will have several years of commercial experience within an IT development company
so you won't get ideal candidates in that case?! do you require industry specific knowledge? - might be worth advertising in a trade magazine or journal.

From my point of view as a developer I don't think the job title helps. "IT Developer" doesn't tell me what kind of role it is. Look at the other roles available elsewhere and see what they are putting in the title. Something like ".NET Software Developer C# or VB.NET" would be better.

Is it web development, forms or a mixture? How senior is the role? You mention full life cycle and liaising with clients so that suggests to me this is quite a senior role and the salary doesn't look that good. This is my take from someone down south however!

Also, and this is a slight bugbear of mine, but is the degree strictly necessary? If someone has 20 years commercial development experience the fact they don't have a degree won't be that much of a problem.

I don't enjoy having to deal with agencies but refusing to go with one is just going to massively cut down the pool of candidates you get, and therefore it's more likely you will end up with a lesser\compromise candidate.

Also drop the requirement for a degree, unless you are in a field where advanced mathematics\physics are important it's not necessary and you are again cutting out a lot of excellent developers who didn't choose that career path.

This appears to be a jack of all trades position combining developer and client liason roles, that in itself is going to put off a lot of programmers who only want to look at a screen and not talk to another human being.

It's probably just not that attractive a role to be honest.

Great feedback, the power of pistonheads! Advert now modified. Going to stick it on 'Jobsite', will look at jobserve as well.

Experience is preferred not absolutely essential dependent on candidate skills, obviously didn't come accross that way initially.

In hindsight would agree about the degree, I've never required it before (and we have excellent staff without). The team felt it gave some assurance of general competency and as previously we've been absolutely swamped with candidates it may have acted as a filter. Salary range is not unrealistic given our previous employment experience - upper range of £30K with a bonus potential of an additional £5K and 7% salary contribution.

It's ok that we exclude people that just want to stare at a screen as it's not how we operate thank god, and I'm very happy to not have interesting roles like that :-)

Don't want to go agency as the team get hounded day & night every single day, each agency supposedly better than any other. I guess I also resent almost being forced into the process of using an agency to find a candidate and financing that.

Ok, so what's the concensus, will we manage to employ without an agency???? It's a challenge, you can all laugh at me in six months time when we still don't have a candidate in post!

Looks like I'm off to get my billboard fitted :-)

Thanks.
Rob.

Ad reads a lot better to me now. Putting a number on the potential bonus helps as well.

Good luck

Hi Rob

I went through exactly the same dilemma as yourself, we needed an asp.net c# developer and advertised on job site, monster, gumtree, Nottingham evening post etc etc and got absolutely nothing our position was almost identical to yours requiring exactly the same skillset it was a nightmare!

We ended up interviewing candidates from agencies as it was the only way to get reasonable candidates in, our salary was £35k + bonus and we did employ somebody from an agency at £31k with the agency getting 15% of that, hopefully they start in April.

The alternative is employing substandard staff and in these roles is it really worth it, a crap developer is a liability, we've had them and learnt from it LOL!

Good luck in your search!!

Could also pay to have a linkedin account that belongs to a few local (UK) developer groups and post there as well
