Working on a rig (Offshore work)

I have turned to PH as for once, my googling skills seem unable to bring anything other than 'Pay me and I will send you a book' type pages.

I have been intrested in offshore work for some time, and have decided that now is probably the best time for me to move into it. I have less ties at home, only parents and family ties, no relationship or kids etc.

I have completed a HND in Marine Engineering and a Cadetship in the Merchant Navy. I have the ENG1 medical certificate, Advanced Firefighting, Personal Safety, Lifeboats and Medical first aid certificates which I am assuming are pretty much 100% needed.

I just don't know where to look to apply etc. Obviously I am willing to start near (if not directly at) the bottom of the ladder. Any advice from current offshore workers or anyone with any information would be amazing.

The big question is how many years do you have as a serving engineer? They will be looking for a few to get on the maintenance or operations ladders.
North Sea or abroad?

If you want to see what's out there, checkout sites like oilcareers, rigzone, faststream or specialist recruiters like swift or fircroft. And of course all the operators.

For certificates you should have an offshore medical and at least an OPITO survival cert. Your company normally pays for this (2k ish I think), but I know a few keen souls who have paid for this themselves to help with job hunting.

Have you looked on the major job websites Oilandgasjobsearch and oilcareers, do not pay for any books/advice on getting jobs offshore/overseas.
