New Job Dilemma

Evening all,

Just after your thoughts regarding my dilemma with a new job.

Currently work for Employer A, basic salery of £28k with a car allowance of £5160pa. The role is site based which can mean anything upweards of 30-35k miles per year with the use of a fuel card. Personel mileage is deducted. Have been there for 6 years and generally enjoy the job apart from the long spells away from home. Typically Monday - Friday living in hotels or in self sourced b&b's. Contracted 45hours per week.

Have been offered an employment oppertunity with Employer B. The role will be office based on a basic of £26k with a car allowance of £3800. No fuel card. Contracted 37.5 hours plus overtime as and when required. And 19p per mile for any business miles. Will require site visits but less than 10% of time will be spent on site.

Both jobs are have similar roles and responsabilities.


My question is do I stick with Employer A or take up a new oppertunity with employer B, or do I go into Employer A and state the offer from Employer B and see what they can do?

Any advice very much appreciated

No real difference in salary - new one is actually less... Guess it comes down to do you mind working away.

Well I am looking to come home and do less miles so that is a big plus. However I seem to have brand loyality with Employer A So maybe just take the dive and see if the grass is greener?

Go for B if you favor the lifestyle, you never know, A may offer a big increase to stay

You could always ask for more money with the new job

If it were me, I would take the new role, but having first negotiated a slight increase to demonstrate that I value myself a little more. If that fails, I'd still take the role, citing reduced travel as my reason. Good luck!

I assure you, working away all the time is not easy, you will soon get very tired of staying in hotels and eating in restuarants every night.

If you have a family, I would not take job A.

I currently work for Employer A and in that time have covered enough miles to get to the moon. All in 6 years.

Just bear in mind that by taking job B, on lower money overall, plus the fact that your home costs will increase (Bet you don't put the heating and lights on as often while you are away, meals paid for while away, etc), you will be significantly worse off.

However, if you want to stop the travelling, these are the sacrifices you need to make.

It's worth knowing that although you're getting paid 19ppm with job B, you can reclaim the difference up to 40p through tax, if you're willing to do the paperwork.
