Why so many recruitment vacancies?

I was previously looking to move careers, after thinking better of it for a short while when a good opportunity seemed to present itself at work, I've come to the conclusion again that I really need to be looking further afield for better paid work.
Browsing the jobs pages brings back a lot of jobs, but what strikes me most is the staggering amount of recruitment (or better yet, "headhunting") vacancies that are available.
How is this possible? Whilst I've not done any scientific analysis I'm rapidly becoming convinced that in my part of the world there are actually more Recruitment Consultant jobs on offer than there are actual jobs. How many Recruitment Consultants does the UK actually need?!
Then don't get me started on the Account Manager roles which turn out to be glorified salesmens jobs...

Whilst there are some decent recruitment consultants (and consultancies) out there, most of the industry seems to be completely soul-destroying and has a commensurately stratospheric turnover rate.
It's possibly the only sales role where you've not only got to sell your product to your customers, but you've also got to sell your customers to your product!
I reckon most agencies will just run the ads on a permanent basis as they'll know they're going to have vacancies come what may.

Because most of us are awful at our jobs and tend to get fired come probation time.
I'd imagine 7/10 recruiters don't make it in the industry. Despite the bashing we get on here (often rightfully so, unfortunately) the job is incredibly hard at times and also very stressful, but very rewarding.
