Where would you go from here?

This is going to be a bit of a long post so sorry in advance. Im at a bit of a cross road in relation to my employment and want to see what the masses think is the best way forward. Here goes...

Quickly just set the scene. Im 28 years old with a small child and have my own home with bills etc.

When I left school with relatively good grades I started college where I studied an advanced GNVQ in Business Studies and an A-level in computing. Although I didnt do too well with the computing I passed the GNVQ with Distinction.

I went on to work for a well known insurance company for 3 years where I sat a number of Financial qualifications including FPC1, FPC2, Life & Pensions foundation certificate to name a few.

Now cutting a long story short, I have worked for a few different companies and was made redundant from my last post about 3 years ago. Since then I have been working as a HGV driver as I passed my test a few years ago. The work is ok, the money is ok and its a secure job. The recession hit and financial services jobs were thin on the ground.

Now im thinking about sitting my CeMAP exams to become a mortgage adviser. The FPC qualifications I already hold will give me an exemption to CeMAP 1 so it would be 2 exams, which I thing I could pass in about 2 months, due to my previous experience.

So my question is what would you do? Do I stay with my current job which is ok, and pays ok etc. Or do I go back, finish my qualifications and go back to having a proper career where my experience lies and is essentially what I trained to do?

I would continue working while studying as I need to support my family.

I say go for it.

If it works out then you'll have a foot in both camps, and can reap the benefits of the financial services world. If it all goes titsup then there's the option of agency driver work.

If it was me I would retain my current employment whilst qualifying. Then I would seek out related financial work during non-driving periods to get a feel and some experience; this could be assisting with local businesses or even some voluntary work. This would give me an insight and allow me to identify if there was indeed any opportunity for me in this new sector. If there is, then make the leap. If not, nothing lost and just keep on truckin'!
