I am a student but need to work over the holidays to earn as much money as possible. I am working 2-4 days a week already but am looking for another flexible job. I thought about typing at home - does anyone actually do this? There seem to be plenty of dodgy schemes on the net but I assume they're scams.
I know that some hospitals outsource their typing to people working from home; this would suit me perfectly as I have medical knowledge and a good typing speed, but I can't find any of these jobs available.

Many hospitals do outsource typing, much to the annoyance of medical secretaries and their unions. They normally do this however with large corporates who are also providing them with other outsourced services, and not always from the UK. It would be very unusual to pick up this type of work as an individual.
If you do however have a genuine medical background and can understand the lexicon, then you could approach some of the small to medium sized GP practices who would not have the volume to make it viable to outsource like hospitals but probably do outsource to individuals, usually retired medical secretaries. One area you will have to satisfy is how you will ensure security of data and patient confidentiality; this could be your biggest stumbling block as it may cost you to comply. It might be worth popping in to a couple of practices and having a quick word the the practice manager to ask if there is a demand for your services and what you would have to put in to place to meet any security standards.
Typing pools are a thing of the past as most of us now do our own at our PC, so you are chasing a shrinking market. There is one other area, but it is highly specialised, and that is with the courts and the Police. The courts for example pass their transcripts to the other side of the globe so that a days worth of transcripts are produced overnight and ready for the next day. Unless you hot tail it to Oz or don't mind working nights, that could be another avenue to investigate. Good luck!
