Well, I'm still waiting to hear how I've got on. When I applied it promised I would find out some time soon after the 22nd July.

This weekend I was chatting to the guy I mentioned earlier who is training to be a train driver. I hadn't realised he had passed the selection process for passenger trains, not freight. He said it took him 2 attempts at the application to get through. Up to now he is loving it.

One thing he told me which I had not realised was that the freight drivers are on yearly contracts.

If they held the interview there, for me it would be a 1400 mile round trip.

Might apply at the weekend. If I were to get an interview it could be viewed as a good point.

Thanks PH. Looking for a new direction earlier this year this thread first put train driver on my radar.

Got a job offer on Wednesday to start training at the end of August. Fresh through the recruitment process so I'm current on the requirements atm if anyone needs help.

Thanks chaps. East Midlands Trains, initial training as a depot driver with mainline in 18 months to 3 years depending, although some of the guys stick to the depot. I'm probably less than 10 minutes drive (20 minutes bike) from the depot so I will be treating myself to a thirsty PH style toy before Christmas.

I'm 42 and although I spent my twenties as an airline pilot, I've spent the last 10 years self employed as a restaurant owner and day trader.

Human nature is to moan and much as I've espoused the merits of being your own boss, I'm actually really looking forward to getting back into a structured career in the transport industry, where, professionally speaking I was happiest.

Feel free to PM me for help with nthe recruitment process, but in general terms I didn't over prepare (deliberately). Just a few days practice of the known tests and several examples in mind of experiences for the structured interview. I will just say that when they asked me about a problem I had solved I gave 2 examples from my flying career but neither was deemed appropriate and I ended up talking about a garden shed I collected that was much larger than expected and how I dealt with this, dramatic, problem. As I was talking I thought "the shed, really?!" but apparently the answer I gave was a pass.

Just had the paperwork through for the freightliner shortlist, the tests are on the 28th of august!
Did anyone else get through?

Oh, and does anyone have any tips with how to approach it?!

I've read people have had responses on various forums, I've heard nothing yet so not looking too good, didn't they give you any indicator on the what the tests would be in the letter?

Nothing via email or telephone, it came via post, a yellow pages size post!

I got a large letter through the post today with a bit of information on the tests and structured interview. Despite the size of the booklets it only gives a few example questions so if there is any advice or anyone has got some more example questions it would be appreciated.

My tests are at 12.45 on the 29th in crewe does anyone know if this is where the training takes place?

Have applied to both the Perth and Wick jobs.

Time to get reading and studying for tests if I get accepted.
