Driving the Stelvio Pass
Discussion
I'd be very interested to hear of anyone's experiences from driving the Stelvio/ Umbrail Passes as I'm planning to do this later in the year.
Some good pics of the Stelvio Pass (Passo dello Stelvio)
I'll be driving my Impreza P1 and would also be keen to hear from any other Scooby drivers that have done this. I am well aware that there is an Elise event every year - great video link to watch www.daveakerman.com/~tchurly/2003.wmv
If anyone is interested in joining me (and possibly a few others) around early September 2004 then please post your interest.
Cheers
Terry

I'm sure I'll think of something more useful to say than this, but make sure your brakes are in good condition - Passo del Stelvio makes for a tough descent particulary when you are relishing the acceleration between corners.
It's an awesome drive, even in summer it's icy and snow at the summit whilst hot and sunny at the bottom. You will love it.

I'll defo get my brakes looked at before going over there. Wanna give myself the best possible chance to have maximum enjoyment.

Bloody hell, how not to drive on a public road!, some pretty atrocious driving there, but don't quote me on it, I think the passenger gave more clues
Maybe it's wise not to put that on here

I've done the Stelvio!
About 5 years ago I went touring Europe with a friend in his 2.8i Capri, and we made sure we did the Stelvio Pass.
What can I say? Awesome road, stupidly tight hairpins that you had to take just the right line around with the rack hard against the stop. Gave a Capri a good hammering on the way up, which must have stired up a load of crap in the tank as it conked out near the top. A quick roadside dismantling of the fuel metering head and we were off again. Going down the other side was fairly scary, the Capri's brakes were poor at the best of times, but despite using only 1st and second on the way down, they were well and truly cooked at the bottom.
There is a cafe near the top with the obligatory postcards, and a permanent collection of bikers inside. Watch out for loonies on push bikes that seem to be attempting some kind of land speed record on the way down.
Well worth doing anyway. I'll have to dig out the photos and scan them in

I couldn't decide if the passenger was scared, or actually disgusted that other road users hadn't seen them on the way to "their rightful place" at the front of the queue....Shocking.

Think I've managed about 62mph according to the bikes speedo & that was on knobblies, the brakes get a bit warm though, mucho fun overtaking things too

Whoever that guy is he's an RShole. If he wants to drive like that on an empty road then fine, but with cars coming the other way and what appears to be the rest of his group heading up the hill - what an idiot. I hope he got a good talking to from his 'mates' at the top.
