There I was, 130 mph down the straight at Donnington, past the Museum, over the white line that I was using as a braking point before the chicane leading onto the start/finish straight. And guess what? Yep, pedal went to the floor. And in case you wondered - the colour of adrenaline is brown! Fortunately I was able to make use of the Grand Prix loop and stop courtesy of handbrake and frantic pedal pumping.
A quick inspection revealed severely worn pads - causing fluid to boil. I know, I know, I should have checked them - but I thought there was plenty of meat and usually I'm very light on my brakes. But the car was flying and I was making HEAVY use of them - thanks to ace tuition from Robbie Kerr, the star of the Renault V6 race at Valencia lasst Sunday.
Two morals, 1) check pads regularly. 2) Select a pit garage next to Topcats is, like me, you have a Griff. The Topcats boys found a spare set of pads and had them in less than five minutes - and back out I went. Thanks guys, you saved my day. And next time I'll be checking my pads after EVERY session!
