Blew My Engine at Combe on Sat!
Discussion
Hey people!
Well if you were at Castle Combe on sat you may have seen a red mk1 mr2 blowing it's engine infront of the pit area..... That would be mine!
Would love any pics or Vids of the death of the car!
Anybody want an MR2? new shocks and tyres!....never tracked or raced...eh hem

Well it had a massive oil leak. So was a large bill comming up anyways!.....this way of finding where the leak was, was quite good fun!....turns out it was the head gasket!

You took a car on the track knowing it had a massive Oil Leak
you deserve a good for that
exactly how much oil did it deposit on the track and how much track time did everyone loose thanks to you ???
Oil deposited on track, max 1 pint over the 1/2 hour track time I had.
Time lost approx 2 mins between sessions as the gasket kindly blew by the pits on the last lap. (lucky i agree....)
Had the car been leaving a trail of oil i'd not have gone out. But it was about 1 drip every 2 secs at full chat. And there were far worse cars heading out.
Could be talking total bollocks (yes, it has been known) a few years ago I was beginning to look for a replacement engine for a GT4 Celica, before an adventure on black ice, and there was a place in south London offering reconditioned units w/ a 3yr guarantee for about £500 which seemed like a bit of a bargain ... especially when compard to Toyota's helpful ideas.
If you can afford the time it is fun. We are looking after our race car ourselves, and thoroughly enjoying it.
OK, there are pain in the arse jobs - fibreglassing a new bonnet after a 70mph impact with the wall springs to mind , but rebuilding the mechanical bits is great.
You never stop learning too - and this is from a team set up from a successful engineering company

Sorry to hear about your engine...
I also have a Red MK1 MR2 (Track prepped too). It has seen a fair few track days already. This coming weekend sees Bruntingthorpe and next month it sees Castle Coombe. So fingers crossed it won't go bang just yet.
I swapped the engine shortly after I bought it, but managed to tidy up the donor before going in. I have recently secured myself another low milage engine for £50 (sorry don't mean to rub it in... :P ) We can drop an engine within 6 hours and get a new one in all on our drive - not difficult. If done through a garage, it should cost more than £300 - £400 in labour. I know a place in Northampton who can do it for less than £400 or another in Durham also for less than £400.
For now this engine I got last Saturday will be my working spare, but before the year is out I'll be rebuilding it (or a the one currently running my car if it goes bang). I am looking at a massive rebuild with all internals (pistons, con rods, seals, gaskets, cams pullies etc...), quad throttle body conversion - ditching Toyotas intake manifold and TVIS system. Engine will be controlled on a mappable OMEX ECU to maximise torque and hp. aiming for around 190 bhp unassisted normally asperated. Might play with a bit of laughing gas next year once it's relability and performance has been prooved.
Email or PM me if you need any pointers

A lot of modifying is needed to squeeze the 3S-GTE engine (MKII Turbo) into the MKI. Intercooler will need to live in the boot. Also with such power you'll need to look at converting the brakes to the Celica GT4 (ST185)type.
Look at the TwoBrutal forums for info on Turbo transplants
The bloke who runs the Forum (Paul Woods) is the guy I mentioned in Durham that can do a like-for-like engine swap for less than £400 notes. No one else in the country knows more about the MK1 MR2 than Paul - really top bloke too.
