Car prep questions
Discussion
Couple of quick questions as I prepare my Mk1 Golf for its first track day.
Tyres - thanks to a fellow PHer (Neil - ) I now have four Yoko A032Rs. Two new, two 50% worn. Which should I put on the front? And does the answer change if the track is wet?
Battery master switch - is it OK to fit this to the negative lead? I have relocated the battery inside the car, and for various reasons it is easier to put the master switch between the battery negative terminal and earth, rather than in the positive lead.
Finally - speaking of battery relocation, I have replaced the great big huge battery under the bonnet with a small one behind the passenger seat. It is well secured - any safety problems with putting it there?
Thanks
Richard

Down to personal views for a lot of this but here goes anyway-
I would stick the old tyres on front in dry coz you are just gunna knacker out new ones- esp N/S/F pretty quickly, same for wet, unless you really want to play loose the back end, then bung new on front for max grip & the arse will be out more than kylies.
I'd actually prob run normal road tyres in the wet, yoko A539 or similar.
No way i'd want a battery in the cabin!! no matter how secuerly mounted it is, unless of course you really want to look like Niki Lauder as the acid burns your flesh if you roll it!
Actually im asumming its a dry jobbie rather than a wet one anyway, like a red top or similar?? if it is they weigh naff all anyway & i'd it have it either in the boot or back under the bonnet.
Battery cutoff, dunno what race regs say on this & if you intend to race/sprint it seems silly to have to do it all over again, but I guess its fine to switch on the neg, thought it woudl be easier to do it on the live tho.

You're most welcome.
Whichever way you go, you'll need to bed the new tyres in beforehand. I'd go on the front first and see what happens if it was dry, but put the new ones on the rear if it was wet.
In fact, running the part worns at either end in the wet might be "interesting". You certainly have a glass half full attitude to tyre wear

Oh, I don't think they're too bad. But I reserve the right to change my mind on that after I've been towed out of a gravel trap. Anyway, I'll probably be going so slowly that it wouldn't matter if I was running on twenty quid Chinese tyres.
Anyone out there got a half roll cage? I thought that would be the easy bit, but all the places I have tried are quoting 6 weeks delivery.

Thanks for that. I'll take my road tyres (newish Michelins) in case it is raining. The only reason I wired the battery the way I did was that it was 4.30 Sunday and I had run out of the size of battery lead terminals I needed. I've decided I'm not happy with it where it is, so I'll have to move and rewire it anyway.

I remembered the name from when you mentioned them on Saturday, and I tried to call them a couple of times, but the phone number listed on their website has been disconnected. Perhaps I'll try sending them an email. Thanks for the reminder anyway.
