I've decided to go get some training of the Avanced Skid Control type. I have heard good things said about Don Palmer and the creative car control course he runs.

Has anyone here been on the course and got any info / experiences to share? (I've dropped Don a mail already, but I just wanted some feedback from anyone who's actually been)

Do it!

Don is a really nice bloke - but be warned, he's well 'ZEN' - you'll get more questions than answers.

...but he's a stunning driver (like about twice as fast as me, and I thought I was quick) and he will teach ANYBODY a lot.

When you arrive, he will ask you what you want to learn... answer carefuly, for if you say 'sideways please' you will trash a set of tyres, brakes and most likely underpants.

Well worth the money.... but:

Don't do it if you are very precious about your car.

nice one steve.
One more question, does it matter what car I use (obviously if I turn up in a ford ka I'm not going to have as mush fun) - or does this kind of course really require a more powerful car to get the most out of it?

Mr Tony,

Really depends what you want to learn - if you take a KA, but want to go sideways - Don will still get it sideways - If you just want to know how to park, he'd probably teach that too - You design your own course.

In that sense it really doesn't matter what you take.

He's best at teaching how to find your own limits, and the limits of whatever car you are driving - I got through 5 tyres and a set of pads finding mine(100 mph backwards might have something to do with it!) - a day with Don creates that dreadful feeling that you just found out how little you know... still.

As I mentioned before, just be careful what you ask for - cos you'll probably get it!

Steve

sounds good! I'll probably take the MGF, not that fast but I figure if I can learn to balance that on the limit then it should stand me in good stead for my next more powerful motor, which I'll be buying this summer. Plus tyres / pads etc are cheap for the MG!

ha...

..on one particularly botched powerslide I ended up flat spotting a tyre so badly, that big chunks of smoking rubber were left strewn all over the runway - so I had to get another tyre fitted just so that I could carry on... all four were then trashed in the afternoon.

Sad, but true

Had visions of a shot of my 'barge' then.
I had to wait a few seconds for the full photo to emerge before my pulse settled.

Hi
Don't take your own car - hire a Vectra of something from Avis - we do all the time for instructing. Just have a check of the pads before you get in it and make sure the pedal is long before you start.

We get about 120 "track miles" out of them before the brakes, are totally f......

Better than taking your own car !!

But you have to be careful as we have had plod turning up at events to take numbers and check ownership/tyres/insurance when we leave!

It's a little grey area - but when you hire a car the only term is that it's not used for timed events.

Poor show on plod !!!

Well, don't take lap times then! That's one of the fundamentals of track days - I'm sure Mr Palmer understands this.
