Track Day Special
Discussion
i am having a 205 GTI built in to a track day special with proper track suspension, roll cage, bucket seats, slicks, close ratio gears etc.
big question is whether to go for a 240bhp 16V engine or stick with a modified version of the standard 8V unit which will put out 185bhp? Car only weighs a bit more than an Elise so it should be pretty rapid either way!
Any pug owners or seasoned track dayers out there with a view? The 8V car is going to cost circa £5K, the 16V option is circa £1500 for the extra 55bhp.

both are using rally cams, the 8V would be putting out 185 at circa 7,500RPM the 16V putting out 240 at 8,500rpm!
With the c/ratio box and the proposed lowered final drive both should be good round a track but i think the 8V is going to have more torque.
This is going to be for 90% track use only BTW.

I'd probably go for the 8v then as I prefer torque as lb/ft is for the road, bhp is for the pub.
Are you getting an ATB LSD fitted as that will help loads for cornering and keeping the power down. A Quaife LSD should cost no more than £500 and the fitting should be no problem as the gearbox is already out.
Gives you a grand to play with for tyres & repairs!

quote:Yeah - with that sort of welly to the front wheels, straight lines will definitely be achieved thru corners
can you put 240bhp through the front wheels & still go in a straight line?
I am not sure, dont forget it will be on grippy slicks with modified suspension geometries to suit.
I know its not going to be as advanced but production touring ar is pushing out 230 - 300hp through the front wheels no probs.
You are just worried about being whupped on a track day by an old shed of a pug!

1500 GBP for the 16v option?
I have a complete and running 405 Mi16 in the garage which you can have for a fraction of that. LAD motorsport sell the 205->Mi16 engine mounts and a modified manifold to suit. 185bhp as standard.
Contact me at tintinracing@hotmail.com if you're interested - car is located in Ipswich.
