I'm going on the Caterham Slalom Day on saturday and I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm dead curious about a couple of things!

Firstly, as I'm 6ft 2, will I fit in the damn thing? I was watching the programme on BBC Four last night about the company and was a bit worried when the Reynard guy was saying that it was very tight, and he was only 5ft 7!!!!

Also, which particular variant of the Seven are they likely to have on the day? Don't suppose it's going to be an R500!!! That would be nice.

Anyway, never driven one before and as I've always wanted to, Saturday can't come soon enough. If anyone on here's going I'll be the one driving the blue Griffith!!

Many thanks - Chris

What time does it all start, where exactly is it, and are spectators/supporters allowed?

It's at Brooklands, Weybridge.

They are bringing an SV (pie eater's version) with them.

What time have people been told to arrive? (haven't got the details to hand myself ).

I'm 6'3" and fit in my (standard wodth) Caterham OK. Girth might be more of a problem if you've been on the pies.

Depends on your proportions - I'm just under 6ft but have longish legs and fitted fine in the ones at the motorshow. Nice and snug.

Really looking forward to it as well. Roll on saturday

According to the details they sent it starts at 9:00, but I'm not sure this is right as we have a whole day event and the details they sent have an itinary for two half day events.

Ted - maybe you should confirm the details and post them up somewhere?

I've done the slalom day before and they use a couple of basic spec (non pie eater) 7's, roadsports with 120bhp, full windscreens and an extremely tail happy suspension setup. If you're tall and thin you'll fit in OK but you may end up looking over the top of the windscreen

I suspect they'll be bringing along a demonstrator or two to tempt some of us to get our cheque books out

The best bit of advice I'd give everyone is make sure you wear the norrowest pair of trainers possible (or better still racing boots) otherwise you'll end up hit the brake and throttle.

Also I think it says long sleaved tops and no shorts (it's going to be 34 degrees on Saturday so it's going to get fairly hot in there).

Cheers for the info guys, I should fit into the SV as the middle aged spread won't be affecting me for many a year to come!

Had a look on the Caterham website and was hoping the cars they supply would be the 160bhp variety, will the ones they have be pretty quick then? I mean, handling wise they're obviously going to knock the socks off my Griffith but was hoping that they'd be quicker too.

Is this thing about long sleeved tops for real? I've got the booking details at home and haven't read them for a while but they must be having a laugh in this heat? I'll probably take both just in case.

Cheers

Painey - to quote the letter.
'Ideally you should wear narrow shoes, a long sleeve top and long trousers (no shorts).'

Looks like zip-off cargo pants are in order.

Here's to a fun day.

Well in a straight line not as quick as your Griff (they're only 120bhp so around 220bhp/tonne), but then this is a slalom type course so you won't be going in a straight line for more than 50 metres

From memory the final course we did allowed a bit of a drag away from the line before the first cone and I got up to the limiter in 3rd (in a 6 speed box) so was probably only doing 65-70mph before spinning whilst attempting to take the corner

Don't worry about the power, you'll have plenty of fun around the cones. Saying that it'd be nice if they brought along an R500 for a lunchtime demonstration.

guys,

will they let us drive barefoot?
last time I drove a seven I had to do this - no problems for me doing this - just as long as they don't mind...

Even with the thinnest shoes I own (which ok aren't racing boots but not far off) I can't hit one pedal by itself, which is understandably frustrating (ie braking whilst trying to accellerate) and frightening (the other way round!!)... Barefoot no problems, except a strange feeling of increased vulnerability...

When I drove an SLR for a track session bare foot, I certainly felt it afterwards! That joke of a throttle pedal gouges you at heel & toe. Order some racing boots...

Oops - just noticed a bit late now - how was it?

I have size 10 feet and wear Adidas jogging trainers with hardly any sole for driving. Wore them for the last caterham day and they were fine. Its also OK to wear Tshirts but i dont think it will be so hot this time around!

Also...my brother is 6'2" aand fitted in fine. His eyes were level with the top of the windscreen but dont let that worry you, you'll be looking out the sides more!
