Can anyone point me at good track schools (i.e. not just the kind that offer you a few quick laps in a single-seater but those that genuinely aim to teach track driving and racecraft)?

Most circuits have a racing school - they offer the 'experience' days but also do proper ARDS instuctor courses too. Speak to whatever circuit is closest to you and explain you're after race tuition, not a few laps in an Elise.
If it's track day experience, for absolute beginners there are the Academy days run by Motorsport Events, covering handling, braking etc. Been very helpful for a lot of track-day newbies (including the other half who was chucking the S2000 around with abandon after her day with them).

Have you considered private one to one tuition !? Drop Nigel Greensall a mail; nigel@nigelgreensall.com. Best money you'll ever spend on tuition.

Felix.

Silverstone Racing School have loads of courses suitable for trackday drivers.

There is one coming up at Donington Park on 14th August where you will have 1-2-1 coaching from an instructor, practice car control in the paddock in a caterham and then six lapping sessions in your own car with debriefs from the instructors.

Give them a call on 01327 320412 to see how they can help.

The main thing with there courses is that they are about teaching you to go quickly rather than your average gift pack product where you get a few laps and a nice certificate.

Hey I saw my name used!!

Yup most points here are relevant.
Patrick is correct I work for most circuits at their schools as an Instructor and am always happy to do 1 to 1.

The key here is:
1. Most circuits offer 'Experiences'
These involve a lengthy briefing and a short taster of on-track experience, where the instructor is merely keeping you on the black stuff and shiny side up!

2. The race school proper actually teaches you something giving time to you and your technique etc.
The advantage of this is that they provide the car. If you have the car then 1 to 1 is the best solution giving true value time to the driver for the day. I work regularly with a number of drivers in this way and they have gone on to be much more accomplished in their disciplines.

Best regs

Steve, as you've joined in, I can confirm Patrick's view that you'll double the price if anybody mentions his name .

However, there is a big difference between Race Tuition and Experience days. Patrick and Steve have convinced me to do the Silverstone race school next month - I'll post how it goes. However, if anybody is looking for something in between the full race tuition experience i.e. getting bollocked for getting a corner wrong, and the 'experience' days, i.e. following a Peugeout 106 in a single seater - give Topcats a call. These guys realy want to make you go faster, but offer a day at a track in one of their amazing cars.

Perfect
