Track car for £3K?
Discussion
I am thinking of getting a car to practise on the track rather than risk my current car.
I am looking at around £3K and the options are MR2 Turbo or a 944 S2 both can be had from around 1990-1991 era. Both RWD which is a compulsory choice. I am tending to the 944 S2 as it seem more robust and predictable and can be serviced fairly easily in the UK.
It may occasionally be a daily driver so wasn't planning to get racing seats etc. but cheap enough not to worry (too much!!) it I write it off in an unfortunate effort.
Mainly to learn the lines etc on a track rather than all out speed.
I would welcome any advice!

yep - both good choices - they seem quite popular on here. thing is you will get hooked and then want to spend loads of money on perfromance/suspension/tyre upgrades etc so your budget could take a hammering.
i went for the cheaper alternative of an E30 BMW (same sort of era) but cheaper/more plentiful parts, easier to repair and leaves a bit left over in the budget for upgrades.

I had an MR2 Turbo and think it made a much better road car than track car. Of the two, the Porsche would be preferable, although I'd still prefer to go for something like an E30 BMW and have it all stripped and caged with some decent seats and harnesses.

A tuned 205 GTi 1.9 is pretty handy if you are not too fussed about being FWD.
You can remove loads of weight and fit big wheels and brakes and they go like stink. A cage is a must, though, as they are a bit flimsy.

Punches well above it's percieved weight, so to speak
Bit of a fan of the ol' 205 myself.
Top trackday tool. Ours is a little lacking on the straights, but corners quite nicely.
None of the lift off oversteer scary stuff that was complained about, unless of course it's wet !
To get give you an impression....

Have to agree... E30's all the way. £3k will get you something very decent for the track.. a 325 Sport comes with a bullet proof straight 6 with 170bhp, RWD, c/r gearbox and LSD as standard. Performance parts are cheap and plentiful once you want more. We've got ours down to 1080kg so pretty light too. Runs rings round Pugs...i went for the cheaper alternative of an E30 BMW (same sort of era) but cheaper/more plentiful parts, easier to repair and leaves a bit left over in the budget for upgrades.
the 944 s2 and the 328 will not have an lsd and that is a must have for any rwd track car
(without it as soon as you get to the point of sliding the inside wheel will spin away all the power hence no sideways fun).
The Nissan 200 sx is a good option if you have £3k, find a scruffy S14 2.0 model (94 on) buy a set of spring / shocks and better pads and you have a good basis to start with, there is plenty of second hand spares (and cars) available here ;
