I'll second that!!! Pound for pound, both in initial cost and running costs, you would struggle to find better. If you don't mind GT3's and Caterhams passing you on the straights, that is!!!

what's your budget; is it to be a trackday car only or will it need to be your 'wheels' aswell? if you use your road car, expect big bills with tyre and brake wear (tyres get badly scrubbed on edges and brakes seldom last the day!); alternatively, get a brake modification (brembo, ap racing, etc.) and wheels with track tyres fitted (you can swap them over when you get to track). my experience is that it is cheaper in the long run to have a trackday only car. by the time you've bought a car for track use and modified it, you may well be into the budget for a reasonable caterham, lotus or westfield. i have a westfield, it breaks now and again, but the smiles are out of this world - 'days made of gold'. good luck. if you haven't been, go to a couple of trackdays, see what's being used; you should be able to get a few passenger rides aswell, most drivers are up for it.

MX5's don't wear tyres. don't do discs and pads, brakes will last all day without overheating, and you could use it as your everyday car without worrying about any of the above!!!

Another topic like this, so to sum it up - on a BUDGET that would be:

RWD cars:
Mazda MX5 (£2k-4k),
Toyota MR2 mk1 or mk2 (£1k-£3k),
BMW 325 (E30/E36) / 328 (E36) (£2-£4k),
Porsche 924/944 (£2k-£6k)

FWD cars:
205 GTI
306 GTI
Citroen BX GTI (16v)
Honda Civic CRX (1990s models?)

Should be enjoyable, not the best though. To get the best I would think of Ultima, Ariel or Radical, relatively inexpensive for that extreme performance

what gineta joe says is true - I bought an mx5 1.6 eunos sport last year to use on the gold track two days at spa, as i dint want to kill the engine in the race car. It ran faultlessly all the while was huge fun and i was easy on tyres brakes etc ...very good cheap trackday fun. i mean it cost 35 quid a corner for the new yoko tyres and 200 quid for classic insurance, even i havent worn the brake disks out on it . They have a bullet proof engine and are as reliable as any other japanese car. They drive wonderfully and are ever so balanced through the corners. I planned to sell mine when i got back but i've kept it and cant bare to part with it as it's as much fun on the corners as my old e30 m3, just not as quick on the straights. my mate has a supercharger on his and that is very impressive indeed.....

Which are all pretty awful track day cars (911 aside). Better off with a C3 or Astra/Golf etc if you're hiring.
