Ever thought about buying an F1 car for track days?
Discussion
I've just had a an F1 driving experience at Mallory Park. Despite many people saying that this wasn't likely to be much cop - it actually turned out to be great! Much better than the F1 experience at 3 sisters in Wigan (silencers on the Forte take a lot of the fun away!).
Anyway, just for fun I thought I'd check whether you can buy F1 cars on the web and I found this site http://www.racecarsdirect.com
Does anyone have any experience of buying an F1 car and using it just for fun at track days? If so, what about maintenance and parts? Is it feasible or just a pipe dream?

I suspect that even if they were allowed, the costs would be horrendous (and don't you need about five people to start an F1 car, armed with laptops, pre-heaters, etc??) You would also end up being the fastest thing on the track by a mile, so you would always have (comparatively) seriously slow cars in your way.

I have been on a couple of trackdays with RMA at Spa where F1 cars were running. They do seem to spend most of their time being worked on. One guy had three arrows and only got out once or twice in two days. Once out they then seem to have a lot of trouble going quickly enough with their comparatively unskilled drivers to get any heat in the tyre. This rather amusingly led to a spin at the bus stop which allowed a mate in a FF2000 to be able to claim that he had passed Schumachers Benetton on the way into the Bus Stop at Spa, not a common brag.

True enough now but back when this was all fields and before the the ATDO decided to get into bed with the MSA for insurance purposes it was all a bit more liberal. This same day had six F1 cars present, a couple of Van-diemen bike engined things our Dagenham dustbin and quite a lot of closed wheel kit too. And yes it was a trackday not a test day (The Enzo in the background was a stock road one). Happy days.

Decided? It wasn't exactly a matter of choice...

A chap called Ron Cumming from way up north acquired the Footwork F1 team hardware and used to occasionally do demo runs at Knockhill. IIRC he restricted himself to 4 laps for each demo, as Knockhill was so short and tight the F1 car would quickly begin to overheat due to a lack of airflow.
He'd turn up in the full works; Footwork artic race car transporter, mechanics and pit crew in Footwork team clothing. I remember them firing the car up in the paddock which had public access. Spectators were standing right next to the car, many behind the exhausts when the finger was twirled in the air:
whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrBAOW! BAOW! BAOW! It was fantastic. Grown adults practically soiling themselves as they jumped back 3 feet in unison, one kid dropped his ice cream and ran straight into the side of the bloke standing next to him.

I wasn't bored, I just had a really creepy bloke lurking at my desk so I went on PH so I could look vitally occupied and thus avoid his kipper like moist hands and somewhat boggly eyes.

As if I'd let that anywhere near one of our days. I'd rather have a fully chavved up bling-bling Saxo with an ASBP bearing crackhead at the wheel than... that.

Hmmmmm .... well the other day I had this Ferrari Monoposto blocking me for half a lap ?????http://media.putfile.com/Donnington-Lap-4
Couldn't run that on an ATDO member's trackday. The organiser of the day you were on must have put some kind of special insurance in place.
D'you think that guy knew what the small shiny reflective things were for?
