Hi - I'm very keen to take my car on a track. I've never done this before and would like to get some training / lessons too. Any suggestions on a good place to go as a beginner? I'm based in London but I'd be prepared to travel to the right place. Also, what's the score with insurance? Can you purchase on a per day basis?
Thanks
Pete

Sorry to mention the insurance. I can see it's a hot topic on this forum so I'll do some more searching around.

Hello and welcome to the track day scene,

What i would say to you is find an airfield location to start with, being fast on the road is one thing, being fast on a track is something all together different. Pleased that you are looking for tuition at an early stage, a little schooling in the first place will make you quick and safe, irrespective of what you are driving.

There is a track day showing on this site for the 18th at an ideal location for you, and the organisers there are able to give you (at a small cost) tuition.

Insurance, yes done to death, but it is a personal thing, but it works like this, if you wreck the car and you sit on the kerb laughing about it, you don't need insurance. On the other hand if you sit on the kerb crying, then insurance is for you.

Hope this helps, now back to F1 on the telly driving

Hi - just done first track day in my MX5 at Goodwood.
Just brilliant - included was lots of really good tuition, helmet, and afternoon tea!

All I did to my car was make sure I had good tyres and break pads, and I had a harness fitted.

All sorts of cars on the day from porsches, viper, westfield etc.to a mini cooper s, golf gti and a smart car roadster.

So well organised and controlled that I think everyone had a great day - even though I was overtaken twice by a porsche RS!

I was really nervous beforehand but after my first few circuits I was relaxed and really enjoying it.
