Does anyone have any experience of these? I'm thinking of buying one for occasional trackday use (I don't like full face helmets). Also, are there any alternatives?

And, if I'm doing trackdays in an MX-5, is a roll bar essential?

Cheers

The Sparco club helmet is OK, and there is no ruling that says you need a roll bar on a track day!

The only problem you face with regards to helmet type, is if you run on a MSV track day at either Oulton Park or Cadwell Park, ..... The chief Instructor will insist you use a "Full face" helmet. I think someone misconstrued the rule that states all drivers of single seater style cars must wear a F/F helmet. All other circuits running their own days, and even independant track day operators uaing Oulton or Cadwell are more than happy to allow open face.

With regards to the roll bar, obviously it is more advisable to have one, than not .... but it isn't mandatory.

Hope this helps you.

I have the club and like it - worn it all day on track and the 'ring.

Yeah it's a bummer MSV don't consider it OK.

If you get roll bars for the MX-5 make sure they are attached to something solid - 'style bars' they look pretty but will collapse in a roll should be avoided....

All helmets are perfectly good as long as the sport the BS or FIA approval. Most "better" helmets simply have extra vents, or are lighter - I've yet to see anyone show one to be safer than another. I reckon in a road tin top but ventilation and weight are pretty academic, so if the helmet fits.

I bought an OMP open face new on ebay. FIA approved but doesn't meet the fire regs, so was only about £50. Nice lid, fits well, comfortable enough and is the same colour as my 205 to boot.

Yes, I have one. It is perfectly adequete for occasional / casual track use to be honest.

I initially bought the Sparco Pro Jet in a fetching blue and silver from Demon Tweeks online but when I tried it on it was perched up on the top of my head in a way that just looked wrong and caused my wife and son to burst out laughing. It also was slightly too big to me. Demon Tweeks were brilliant and said to send it straight back for a full refund, which I did.

On the advice of PHers I drove up to GP Racewear's Chiswick showroom and tried helmets on, and the Sparco Club fitted me exactly and looked ok too.

The only thing I would say is that everyone's head is different and it's best to go to somewhere like GP Racewear where you can try a variety of helmets on until you find one that fits properly. In many ways that's more important than almost anything.

I visited GPR at Silverstone and got a Arai Jet 4 open faced helmet in XXL (coz my head is enormous) and it fits beautifully. ONly one that wasnt too small in this style and price range.

Interestingly it says you can paint the helmet in the instructions. Shall i let the kids loose on it or do some free advertising?
