What's the score on this - I'm about to buy a helmet for tracking the MX5 in, and I'd rather it were an open-face one for the extra peripheral vision. Are any tracks going to require a full-face one if I'm driving with the roof down?

Most track day organisers will allow open faced helmets, and in fact some drivers race in an open face helmet in in convertible cars with no hood. Unfortunately MSV operating from Oulton Park do stipulate that it is an insurance requirement to wear a full face helmet. Quite honestly, I think someone down the line has misinterpreted the rule which insists that a full face is worn in open top single seaters, but should you go to Oulton Park, I think you will find they insist on full face!! Hope this helps influence your decision, and just for the record, I wear a full face all the time when instructing ......... If you've ever experienced an airbag going off in your face, you would understand why!! It may well be worth checking with Brands Hatch, because that is where the MSV trackdays are organised from, and of course Cadwell Park, Snetterton, Brands Hatch and Oulton Park all fall under the same banner.

What about Donington Park? I've just purchased an open face helmet for my first trackday next month in my RS. I assume this will be OK??

Yes, you won't have a problem with that. Donington tend to use more common sense!!!

If you stopped hitted the armco you wouldn't have to worry about air bags going off.
