Hi,

My son is 14, and is obsessed with cars... like me!

He would love to be able to drive or race, but obviosly doesn't have a licence, so it is hard to find somewhere.

I have thought of Banger Racing, as I know it is cheap to do, but have a few questions:

1. Where abouts (near/in surrey) could he go.

2. Where should I buy a car from?

3. are there any websites that i should see about this?

Thanks
GFWilliams

Racing series, t-cars, saxmax and ginetta juniors. Those are championships for 14-17 years olds, cars are "relatively" inexpensive, but be prepared to pay inexcess of £14k for a t-car or ginetta and over £7k for a saxmax car.

I think that trials are probably going to be your cheapest option.

Basically, scrambling in cars. Think muddy hill with a course laid out on it, the challenge is to get to the end of the course. Drive there, compete, drive home, minimal chance of damage or injury. It's not racing, but if racing is your bag you would probably be looking at karts?

The Under 17s Car Club. It's not racing but teaches you how to drive on airfields all over the country, and holds other special events like go-karting, lorry driving, line skills (racing lines) etc. etc. I was a member from 12 to 17 and enjoyed it.

Interestingly I was not allowed to be a bouncer in a vintage trail coz I was under 16

Maybe this would be a good start? Its cheap and will teach him alot about car control and hopefully will get it out of his sytem so he doesnt go mad on the road when he gets his license. No doubt it would be a good place to step up to rallycross or rally from.

if he is really interested in real racing buy him a shift kart for a few grand.
No idea if there is any kart racing in your area but id go that route instead of banger racing.

Banger racing cant be all that cheap...after all you need a new car after every single event and the car will need towing around! Not to mention the fact that every car you use will need a certain amount of preperation put in to it...

If he's really, really interested he'll be finding all this out for himself, getting some work experience with a team and bugging you like hell for every tiny job you can give him to make some extra money for it.

If he isn't... don't bother.

Out of T-cars, Ginetta Junior and Chavmax....id say by far the best option is Ginetta Juniors...yes it is expensive, but all serious forms of motorsport are.

It may be an idea to book a test session in one of these cars to see if it is what he really wants.

Contact me if you would like some more info

Hi,

We are the accredited driver coaching company for the Playstation Junior Ginetta Championship and the main industry provider of driver coaching for 14-17yr olds.

From reading your past post's it sounds as if budget is an issue. All forms of motorsport whether it is banger racing or touring cars is going to cost you-motorsport is not cheap.

I think before you commit to anything you should find out if your son does really want to get involved in Motorsport of some kind.

We hold Young Driver Training and Assesment days at airfield venues across the UK where your son will get to drive a car with one to one coaching in a safe enviroment. At the end of the day the instructor will offer you feedback and let you know what your options are.

If you are interested in doing this day contact katie@benelliottracing.com for more details or go to www.benelliottracing.com.

We have a lot of young drivers on our database, so we can easily find someone to share the cost with you, so no need to worry about budget.

Thanks
