I'm looking to get a setup to allow me to video some trackday footage - as I have no need for a normal video camera I thought a bullet cam/Archos digital recorder combination would suit me better. I like the look of the Archos 504, but it looks like I'd also need the optional travel pack as the Archos itself doesn't seem to be able to connect to the camera directly.

Does anyone on here use such a setup for trackdays? I like the idea of also being able to use the Archos for taking on holiday etc. How well does it cope with normal trackday usage, I would assume the fact it uses a hard drive doesn't affect it's performance adversely?

Cheers
Jamie

Some chaps on the VX220 forum use a bullet cam/archos setup so it can definately be done.

HDD doesnt degrade the video feed quality.

Thanks Plotloss, hadn't considered doing a search over there for some reason, it's for my VX smash

I was more concerned about any vibrations through the car affecting the HD heads, not loss of quality. Will do a search over on VX220.org, cheers

I have captured from archos a few times via a bullet camera but have to say it records at mpeg4 which is suitable for the internet but not so great for televisions.

As a device that has other uses other than recording footage it's definately worth it.

What are you going to edit the footage on?

I'm not especially concerned about going for the ultimate image quality, it'll be used purely for uploading to my PC and maybe to the web. I don't have any wonderful setup of PC, assume Windows Movie Maker will be fine for my needs?

It's all good then.

Windows movie maker would suffice and do the job well enough.

Please let me know how it comes out. Have fun and good luck.

It might be Ok in a VX but I tried a mate's Archos in my Locost R1 and the vibrations killed the recording, despite the Archos being in a padded bag under the seat. I did get some recording from it by repairing the mpeg file, but lost approximately 50% due to corrupt recording so it probably didnt do the HDD inside it a lot of good!

Here's a clip on Youtube of the recording I salvaged, the bullet cam did mist up a little due to it being a cold day (is Anglesey ever not cold!), so quality should normally be a bit better than this, but it gives you an idea.

mate of mine uses an archos 504 DVR IIRC they do a bullet type camera for it as well see here www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/499488/art/archos/multimedia-player-504-160.html?itag=9698 I'll be getting one in the new year although I've seen the 504 with 60b HDD for £259 without docking station or camera he doesn't seem to have a problem but he was driving a NSX

Thanks for that! I've ordered the Archos helmet camera from here, and will be buying a 40GB 504 at some point soon. Apparently the bullet camera has a remote control, so you can store the DVR unit itself in a padded bag and simply control if via the remote. Best price I've found so far for the 40GB unit is £199 from Amazon, or about £250 for the 80GB.

I've got an old Archos AV400 on the Tuscan and it works great with the bullet cam that I got at the same time a while back....dunno the make though...would have to look it up.

From what I can tell, looking at the current Archos models on their site, you would need the bit they sell to connect to the camera, whereas the old type like mine is all in one, which I think you can still get from other sources.

Quality is good but downside is its in AVI format that so far haven't found a codec to enable playing on PC, but on TV is v.good.

They've got an upgrade file on their site for mine at the mo that is supposed to allow me to record in MPEG4 but haven't tried it yet.

The Archos helmet camcorder that I've ordered has the travel adaptor with it, I think it costs about £50 otherwise eek Although I think once you have the adaptor you can use any normal bullet cam with it

If you already have the bullet camera, I'd try and avoid the Archos to be honest. It's a great bit of kit, but the hard drive is prone to crashing if it gets knocked around too much.

I've got the Canon MV700i camcorder (make sure that the camera has the i after the model number as that refers to the analogue input you need) and the image quality will be better then the Archos as it's not compressed.

Here is a link to one on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CANON-MV700i-MI

It's well worth thinking about and a fair bit cheaper.

True...my first couple of attempts resulted in the files not being able to be replayed coz I had it fairly solidly attached to the tunnel....so now its velco attched to the passenger seat...ok so if there is a passenger then hold it or put it somewhere secure but not rigid.

I went for the bullet camera option coz at the time camcorders weren't easy to mount. They also rather obvious if at the NRing for instance.

Not sure I've understood what you mean? You can use a bullet camera with the canon I sent you the link for. Stick the camcorder in the glovebox, mount the bullet camera anywhere you want (Maplin's do a great little mount for about £10) and you are off an running!
