So I'm off to a public day at the 'ring and a two-day track day at Spa at the end of May.

Now, my own insurers (AON) won't insure me for either, apparently due to the number of claims they've received as a result of incidents at both tracks.

The 'ring I can believe, but not Spa. Still....

So I've tried competition car insurance (Egger Lawson). Their policy has now changed, apparently, so they only insure a *minimum* of 50% of the value of the car. You can no longer buy, say, £5k's worth of cover for a reasonable sum.

This means a staggering £214 per day for £15k's worth of cover at Spa, and £267 per day at the 'ring. Bit rich for me - it's more than the cost of the track day itself!

Does anyone know of any alternatives?

Have you always had insurance for track days? Either you buy what you can get and figure it into the overall cost of doing track, maybe doing less days eg going without Siverstone will save you about £300 ! or go without insurance..which I reckon is what most people are doing. Lets face it, track days are not for those of a nervous disposition or a bean-counting tendency . Assume the car is worth 30k so maybe spending a few hundred a time on insurance is worth it. I'm in the same RS boat, last year NU were good, this year they are putting so much excess on that I'm not insuring for track days

For UK track days I have had insurance, for foreign ones I've used Competition Car insurance and paid a small stipend for a reasonable degree of cover, but this year I shan't bother as it's way too expensive.

Instead I will try not to crash.

Spa fair enough its a racetrack, but the 'ring is classed as a toll paying public road if its a public day, they might contest it but its not an actual track day.

Peter,

When did AON change their terms? When I took out my insurance with AON I specifically asked if they would cover me for Spa and the Ring and was told yes. They have always honoured that agreement in the past.

I'd be tempted to argue that they've covered you in the past, so why not now. If they've changed their terms, why where you not informed. I believe others have successfully argued, and subsequently been covered.

I phoned on Monday (I think) and asked and they said "no". Only if a recognised car club (such as PCGB) had organised the event - not an independent such as Autotrack, who I'm going with at end May.

Have a go yourself.... see what they say to you. If they say yes, I'll give them some gyp as it's extremely annoying and I'll have to pussyfoot around once again for lack of insurance.

sunninghill insure my Griff.

just changed to them as they include ANY marshalled event, anywhere included in the policy.

have to inform them prior to event and excess rises to £1k.

thats ANY MARSHALLED EVENT - ANYWHERE! and the quote was the same as my old insurer! Just let them know about -
the Ring - 4days
Spa - 1day
A1 Ring - 1 day

all in may, i'll let you know if there's any probs.

got to be a bargain!

I can second Sunninghill. Although the 'ring is a toll road they still specify the £1k excess but that's fair enough for me.

They also allow me to temporarily add 2nd drivers - my Dad and friend have driven my Chimaera on track.

Luckily I have not had to claim so I can't vouch for their post-crunch service!

Well thanks for trying but I just phoned them and their cover is TVR-only. So I lucked out.

Sigh.

Have you tried www.autotorque.co.uk ?

Their website says they are a specialist car insurer and do mention track days.
