I have been looking at getting some tyres for track days -either used slicks or trackday type tyres.
car is a ex: rover tomcat (road legal) around 1100kg
I tried the car at donny a few weeks ago and it was pretty good but a bit fish taily especially when the tyres got hot (avon zz3's)
like the looks of the r888's but they are a lot dearer than kuhmo's etc...
thanks for any advise

888s are ok but not a patch on decent slicks, a step on from road tyres but not a leap as the slicks can be.

the Rwd guys rave more about the 888s than the gay wheel drive crew (says me with a Golf!)

Probs with used slicks is they can look ok wear wise, but they can be shagged, ive had quite a few sets of used ones now & some are amazing, some are little better than road tyres, & ive had a set be considerably worse on cooler days & also the rears on fwd can take so long to heat up, an utter pain on cooler sessioned track days, & when they let go, you need Bruce Lees reactions! even warm days need a good lap, unlike 888s or ao48s where you can go hard right out of the blocks.

Ps is its getting loose at the rear try lower pressures, not always a cure but can help it.

Seconded. Borrowed some very used DJo1s from a mate in the John cooper challenge and they were great up until the point where i span. Hadnt got them warm enough in the second session.

I use 888s at the mo and they are good compared to road tyres but to be fair haven't had anything else to compare them to. Shop around - you can get them cheap(ish)

I was running tyres pressures of 30 front and 28 rear if I remember.

Only other thing is maybe its a bit soft on the springs at the rear.
I hardened up the rear shocks on my last session and it did seem to be much better.

I know the racers run 1000lb fronts and 1400lb rears!

I thought with the car being very front heavy I decided to go for
550lb front springs and 350lb rears.

Maybe I need to go say 700lb rear as I would thought roversport engineers know better than me!

Weve now got 888's on our Elise and seem excellent. Wet and dry. Got a v good price and next day del from Camskill Tyres. Worth a try. Certainly a big gain over the old toyo road tyres.

Ps Considering Donni on 17th, anyone else for some ice and rain??

The trouble with second hand slicks is you have little or no idea how many heat cycles they have been through. Chances are that they are available second hand because they are shagged, (regardless of how much tread is left.)

yeah thanks camskill look pretty good around £420 for set -I was hoping to get a wheel deal with them but I don't think anyone will offer them for a good deal

seen kuhmo ku15's for £260 for full set.....probably not as good though -which defeats the object..
or used slicks at around £150 -could be knackered though

I would be wary about putting slicks onto a road car. Slicks work best when they are held perpendicular to the road surface, so unless you have a great suspension setup you will not be making the best of the tyres. In addition they put a lot of load into the chassis and suspension due to the grip levels. It is not uncommon to discover nasty things happening to chassis loading points on road cars after extended slick use. Personally, I would lean towards the R type tyres, you have a great choice these days. Not used the Toyo's but by all accounts they are a bargain, I have used both the Yokohama's (A032) and the Dunlop's (DZ02). I like both, grip wise they are very similar, nicely progressive, with the Dunlop's probably wearing slightly better.
