EVO Mag- 8min M3 update - Laugh? I nearly sh*t myself!!
Discussion
In the current EVO mag is an update on the 8min M3 thingy...
The car was in attendance at the last RMA event at the ring and... " in 2 days of lapping the only things to pass him were a 993 GT2 and an DTM M3" in his own words "Not too shabby"
So either he wasnt driving or he was blinking when he was overtaken by a Megane Diesel exiting Aremburg, and enjoying the scenery when he was taken on the run upto stielestruke by a Manthey 964.

I'm sure he was just on a cool-down lap...
Actually, he seemed to be going rather well on the occasion he passed me...

they have wasted a shed load of money on that project trying to get the wrong car under 8min and paying the price for it the car is worth no where near what they've spent on it now.
Except they've filled a good few pages of EVO with it so it has repaid some of its value:- the aim of the project was never about money anyway. It was always going to be a 'challenge' getting an E36 M3 to go sub-8, which is half the reason the articles have made compelling reading for me. I've briefly passengered with Jethro and his driving none to shabby (although I do think the comment about Dirk being worth "a second or two" is tongue in cheek......)

That's a valid point. I think there is an element of schadenfreude in such challenges. It was certainly entertaining watching Fifth Gear attempt to get 200mph out of an Esprit.

I think this was on a trackday not a public day.
I have seen the Evo car there on a public day, presumably after the test in question and before publication of the article. Journalistic lead times are confusing things methinks.
When I was there, the Evo M3 (Jethro driving) was joined by the Carrera GT. Maybe Jethro is being sent back every month until he beats 8mins or perhaps the CGT will tow him around in 7:59 as a last resort?
I'd trust Dirk Schoysman to be up to 10secs quicker as well; handy tho' the Bovmeister undoubtedly is. He's not only a pro driver, but he knows the ring like few others. That's quicker by less than a sec a mile. Very feasible.

Another 'non' event I had experience of - at least they made a silk purse out of a sows ear (ie, they still produced a programme albeit about VMAX itself)

....and how about the comment:
"Oh and Dirk wasnt avaiable and he's worth at least a second or two over me..."

He's only 2 seconds a lap slower than Dirk!! In that case I suggest we start a petition to make Olaf Manthey give him a place in one of his VLN cars!! Maybe thats the secret to beating the Alzen cars!
Make The Bov' a VLN racer... sign below!

Its makes me chuckle everytime I see the powerstation advert in EVO magazine. It shows a picture of the M3 with the words ''EVO M3 nurburgring record'' or some such thing. What record might that be then?

LOL, I noticed that too. It's the record that Bov is attempting to break. Like my Subaru Impreza is the '6 min nurburgring record impreza' as I am trying to get down to that time, even though I am about 3.5 minutes off at the moment

I believe it's called a "joke"
if it was the old cronie himself clarkson doing it everyone would be loving it, the fact that it is EVO leads itself to some form of resentment. granted they do seem to pick some odd projects but no stranger than the 27 litre rover in PPC which will, like barkers capri and the ring car, also cost far more to build than it will sell for....
i like EVO because they are enthusiasts and i think the M3 GT was a good choice of car to choose, remember they have already built the lightest ever caterham and thouth the M3 GT is super rare, it is not unsimilar to a lot of other cars out there that peopel can buy.
agree with the lightweight comments but forced induction is a pikey way to go faster, i am a devotee of colin chapman on this one, light weight and good aerodynamics over the turbo anyday, after all, how fast did they get the lotus XI to go down the mulsanne?!?
