I'm after the collected wisdom of the PH Track Day crew here, which would be the better road legal track tyre for a Pug 205 GTi, for both UK trackdays, and the Nordschleife?

The size I need is 195/50/15

The Yoko A048?

Toyo R888?

Or any other suggestions? I plan to fit them on a second set of alloys, only to be used on track. I have normal road tyres for day to day use. They need to be road legal (i.e. no slicks) because of the rules of the Touristfarhten days at the ring.

Advice welcome guys

in my opinion you get what you pay for with tyres. any serious track day go-er will be going for the yokohama's. Toyo's are invariably for those who either can't afford or don't know any better.

all IMHO.

Yoko's all the way, ive used 032s/38s/and 48s plenty over the years. To get the most out of such tyres you need some negative camber

We run both on cars and have compared them back to back on an Exige, the Yoko is the better (i.e. faster) tyre but at the end of the day it's a track day not a race, you'll get better value out of the Toyo, it'll last longer and they are cheaper. If you want the extra few seconds a Yoko will give you spend the difference on some tuition!

Im sure the Yokos are good, but the toyos are worth a look.

The I have got r888s currently on my 911 gt3 and they are awesome.

They are nothing like the normal t1r t1s type tyres.

Used them on two track days..spa and brands and they have been very impressive so far.

From guys ive chatted to who've run them on hatches (Golfs & 306 Pugs- both bit heavier then a 205 tho) which are obviously a lot harder on front tyres than exiges etc & in the size the chap is after, the toyos have lasted 2 trackdays, before illegal depths, the Yoko 48s 8+

There are lots of deals around for the Toyos & you can usually get them for half the price of the Yoko (ball park £200 888, £400 48) but if they only last such a short time on a hatch only you can decide if its worth it.

Mac,

As above I have the D01J's on my car and I must say I am very impressed with the levels of dry grip. They are a motorsport tyre though so road noise and ride are completely different to a road tyre, not that it'll bother you!

They're discontinued now, so are relatively cheap. Wear rates seem pretty good, although I beleive that there are different compounds which the tyres come in.

I use Colway intermediates. They take a bit more balancing but they're much harder wearing than most road tyres and they're built for the job. The Porsche 924 championship use them and at about 45 quid a corner you can't go too far wrong.
