Flying out to Hahn at 7am from Stansted, picking up a hire car from the airport, quick dash to the 'ring to spend from about midday to 7.30pm lapping, then back to the airport in time for a 11pm flight back to Stansted.

Looks good in theory, although I feel i'm likely to be a tad tired by the end of the day. Best part of it is my flight has cost me £25 incl. taxes with Ryanair, car hire will be about £100 for something like a Z4 or SLK, then it's just laps and petrol to pay for.

watch the hire company say they've overbooked the sports cars and 'upgrade you' to a people carrier

Just make sure you sleep on the flight! What car did you decide on in the end?

buy some false plates as well - the hire companies have spotters there on public days & the hire company will charge you for tyre wear etc. Oh and don't have an accident in it!

350Z not available from Hahn, so will probably have a go in the SLK. It's only the 200 but it should be fun.

Thanks for the advice. The company I plan to use have nothing in their T&Cs that would exclude 'ring use, so I don't see how they can stop me using the vehicle on a public road.

Quite. I don't believe that the hire companies would pay people to stand around the Ring all day looking for their cars. I haven't seen enough Hertz A class' wedged face first into Bergwerk to warrant it. It is after all, as you say, a public road. If you don't trash the car and the t&c's are clear - what could be their protest?

Incidentally, and indeed back on topic. Yes, you are clearly raving mad. But, all respect to you - just a pity you'll not have the time to catch a steak in the Pistenklause during your visit!

I would imagine that's illegal, on a public road.

Probably... but having been fuelling up at the Dottingerhohe along side all manner of race cars including slick shod single seaters (ok it wasnt a public day, but the road to the petrol station is proper public roads), are they really likely to make that big a deal of it while you're lapping?

It's pretty rare for a brit to get the car he rented, even if he reserved it specifically. Often a Merc coupe / Z3 / SLK / 330D will become a people carrier.

Yip, saw a turned away a brit saloon racer who diddnt realise it was a public road on a public day & thus a non road car not allowed, & ive been made to put my front plate on there too (runs cooler without it, so its always off on normal tracks)

Please do come back and let us know how it went. My info is all the local hire companies are onto the Ring and have processes and procedures to capture and charge for it. Of course if you know of a company that doesn't... then my ears are very receptive

Maybe I've lived in Germany too long and have lost my sense of humour, please tell me that was a joke, right?

I got shaffted by Avis recently who gave me a boxster.... I took it round the ring, and then the clutch went.

They picked it up and then charger €4500 to my credit card, saying that it was on a racing circuit!

I dont think it was my fault, I wasnt using the clutch any harder than if I was on the road. We werent giving it major as I was aware of the €800 deposit sticker which I had put on the dash!!!

So beware!!!

There is a firm who will rent you a race prep'd car through ring racing. Cheap too!!
