For my next trip to the 'ring I am probably going to have to hire a car to lap in as the wife is insisting I fly so i'm only away one night.

Anyone know of any companies that would hire something like a Golf GTi, and that I would be able to pick up and collect from Cologne Airport.

Tried the likes of Hertz, Avis etc. and they have nothing remotely sporty for hire.

You dont need anything sporty.... there was a guy in a Megane Diesel that was a hire car there the last time I went and people were smiling more after having "fast??" laps with him than they were with the GT3's etc...

But you should be able to pick a 3.2 Alfa from Cologne... pretty sure they all have "kiene Ringfarten" clauses though...

If you hire a car, dont go for something fast, i have hired a bmw 320d, a merc slk 200 and a 530d
the 530 is definatly the quickest, the slk handled the best and the 320 means you wont kill yourself and get to learn some of the lines.
I went out in my rental 530 last sunday and overtook all kinds of cars, porsches, ferrari's, and even a maroon coloured nobel.
Lots of people in those kind of cars will not push them, its all about carrying spped and not outright speed in anywhere except a few places

Got to be honest I wasn't looking to rent something mega fast so something like a 530d although a bit of a luxo-barge would be fine. Who did you rent from?

i would have thought the 530 to be a brage but i was suprised by how tight it felt, not near a sports car but not too bad.
Best to check what companies in germany will exclude the ring in the terms and conditions
I have used the same companies all the time but i think they are tightening up on what they will allow now
Europcar have gotten good recomendations, and best to go for all the insurance they will offer
The deal i had ended up with a 100 euro excess

Hey guys - first post here.

I was at the 'Ring at the weekend. No doubt saw some of you guys over there (I was in a Purple E36 M3).

Do you have the link for the Rent-a-Racer or equivalent? €300 for 11 laps sounds pretty reasonable by the time you factor in tunnel and petrol costs to get your car over there.

I came up behind the "rent a racers" a few times and they certainly look the business on the track. They appear to handle quite well, and I've heard nothing but rave reviews from those who have driven them.

oh well i got confused where they were
some of my friends rented one and said it was nice, very very light at the back, it was an e36 compact
and felt a little underpowered.
But a great idea!

I was out on Thursday with a mate, having a bit of sneaky practise before we race there in a couple of weeks time. We rented a 320i from rent-racecar.de and it was great.

Theo and his wife who run the business couldn't have been more helpful and the car was fine. They all have full harnesses and roll cages so make sure you take a lid with you. Our car was set up very stiff so had good grip in the dry but needed to be given plenty of respect when it was damp.

We completed 14 laps and the cost including insurance and taxes was about 450 euro's.

Apparently they will have an M3 available in a couple of weeks.

Cheers

Cracking idea, but what on Earth does this (from the "English" version of their web site) mean;

"With judgement of 12. May 1998 decided the regional court Hamburg that one has to if necessary also answer for contents of the left side by the yield of a on the left of. This can be prevented, so the LG, only by the fact that one dissociates oneself expressly from these contents.

On the sides rent racecar.de are left put to other sides in the Internet. To all this left applies: The rent racecar.de.de explains expressly that she does not have any influence on the organization and contents of the left sides.

Therefore the rent racecar.de dissociates itself hereby expressly from all contents of all left sides on these homepage and does not make themselves these contents not own."

Still better than my German, though ...

4car recently did an article where they hired a brand new 911 in germany from avis and then drove it around the ring.

the rental for the 911 wasnt particulary expensive as well

That's fine then, the 'ring is a public toll road
