Another Rob Gravett day

Up for the Ultimate Car Control Course?

Pistonheads brings you the Ultimate Car Control course. It's a one-day course, and PistonHeads can offer a special, heavy discount - the course normally costs the best part of £1K, we've negotiated a deal that allows you to attend for just £360 inc VAT.

Ultimate Car Control
Ultimate Car Control

We've run several of these now and PHers have been asking for more dates so we've arranged another one for Saturday May 20th.

Your tutor will be Robb Gravett, the successful ex-British Touring Car Champion, who has devised an incredible, unique and dynamic teaching programme.

Each student will be taught car handling through dynamic understanding. This is achieved through a mixture of classroom instruction, where you learn the principles and then the practical, where you put those principles into practice on the tarmac.

Robb provides personal training throughout the day. He has a unique ability to determine all areas of competence required to attain maximum car control. Robb’s teaching provides the student with a full dynamic awareness that effectively imparts a level of car control that is, without doubt, unsurpassed worldwide.

Cars will be provided at no extra cost, but you are welcome to bring your own vehicle to use during the training.

If you are interested on joining him and the Ultimate Car Control team on this one-day Course, operated at the Transport Research Laboratory in Crowthorne, Berkshire, please contact: Cate Walton 07795 494646 / 01344 751669 or email cate@ultimatecarcontrol.com

I'm a bit confused as to what this course is (so that I can determine if this is of interest to me):

Is this one-on-one tuition throughout the day (after the classroom), or, one of those events were you spend most of the day standing round waiting for your 'go'?

If there is only one tutor then presumably it is the latter? Anybody know how much driving you get on this course?

There were three instructors, plus Rob, when I went. There is some class room stuff first thing, but the rest of the day is practical, so you do get a good amount of time in the car.

Steve.

Thanks Steve, info is much appreciated. Does sound a good deal then & good opportunity for a bit of a laugh with fellow Pistonheads.

Steve / anybody else who's has gone on a course,

If I did attend I'd be looking to take a Tamora, and will see if two pals are interested - T350C & 996 C4S, and we would ideally be using our own cars.

What can we expect in terms of tyre wear? Is it a case of new tryes all round at the end of the day (Steve I can see form your profile you have a Cerbie, so your experience would be very relevant!)?

Hi,
I went in my Chim, and the tyre wear is hardly noticeable. They have a great tarmac surface (note the course is not conducted on the TRL test track). The key objective of the day is to learn how to use "dynamics" to get you round corners quickly and safely - without screeching the tyres or spinning the wheels. Hence the tyres don't get wrecked!

Rob is a great instructor, as are his colleagues Cate, Graham and Jurgens, so you get plenty of time on the track with and without an instructor on board. The morning sessions were mostly done in their cars (Z3, Z4 and a Smart car of some sorts ) There is inevitably some hanging around, but its good to watch others and see how they are carryiong out the techniques being taught.

I live just down the road, so may pop over mid afternoon for a look, and to guide you all to the local pub afterwards for a shandy.

In summary - do it. You will get so much more from your car out on the road.

Tyre wear was fine - not much at all. The technique taught does involve hard braking, but again doesn't seem to cause too much wear to the pads considering. Definitely gave me a lot more confidence approaching corners at pace. Enjoy!

We did a few of these with VX220.org members last year - hugely informative, and fantastic fun!

To be honest, I had expected a bit of a jolly with smoking tyres, powerslides, etc. How wrong could I have been. Robb's technique has been the single most useful instruction I've had, and I still use it every day.

Tell Robb, Cate and the guys that Huntsman says hello!

Well, I booked myself and girlfiend. We'll be going in my Grif, which I suppose I'll be using at some point. She will be using one of their cars all day, as her MG Midget is not really up to such strenuous exertions and she has never done anything like this before. See you all there!

Take her midget, and decide when you get there.

There is no overtaking, no performance requirements, just tuition with an instructor in the passengerseat all day, and practise. According to Robb, you could bring a gokart and apply the same principles, front, four and rear wheel drive all apply, regardless of power. At least if you take both cars, you'll be able to decide on the day

Had a superb day and learned a hell of a lot about my car and me driving my car.
Robb and the team were very enthusiastic and wanted us all to do well and have some fun into the bargain.

I now love my car even more than when I bought it because I know what it's capable of. It has surpassed my expectations today.

Many many thanks to Robb, Cate and the team for a great day. (Still grinning!)

ps. Pum - I noticed you shooting some video - any chance of posting it on here?

Only shot a couple of laps of Jay. Not sure when I'll get it onto the PC and editted, and probably not very interesting for anyone else. With hindsight, I should have shot other cars too - sorry.

Good day. Learnt quite a lot. I already knew, or was aware of about half of what they were teaching, but it certainly helped reinforce that, fill in some gaps, bring it all into better focus, and specifically practice the techniques they were teaching. Jay learnt alot, having done nothing like this before.

Good day, with good instructors and fellow student.

Did anybody take a Caterham or other 7 type machine along to the last UCC day? There was a wheel centre cap with a 7 logo on that must have popped out, just wondered if it belonged to anyone here. Drop us a PM if you're missing one.
