Hi all,
I'll be travelling from Calais to the ring tomorrow morning - is A25/E42 the best route to take based on any recent experiences? Last couple of trips resulted in much time spent crawling through roadworks - although this was last summer.

Looking at Ben's site E40-N67-A258 via Brussels is listed - I'd have thought the Brussels area would be highly congested?

many thanks,

fergus

depends what time of day you go through. currently there are no roadworks on the E40.

The road out of Eupen to Germany, the 'highway to hell', would currently have several chelsea 4x4 owners reaching for their 'guide to off road driving'. If you are taking anything saucy, (i.e. low), you may want to plan another route (i.e. go via Prum). I have never seen such an inductrial way of resurfacing a road (read - take the first TWO feet off the top and start again, with tennis ball sized hardcore badly laid.... you get picture)

Also note that the road just before Schlieden (on the A258) diverts you along some *very* back roads, through Schleiden (A265) back towards to the A258. If it's the first time you've driven the 258, watch out for some cheeky bends along the route. Generally good visibility & surface though (the change between Belgium & Germany is very marked!)

Gent - Brussels - Outskirts of Liege (luik) on E40 then E42 passed Ververies to Prum. Then the 258 I think it is through Gerolstein to Kelberg and the ring.

Yeh, some bright spark took us that way back last year... never again - I prefer the Prum route.

my choice of route this year is going to be E40 from Calais, then E42 southbound at Dunkerque. E42 past Lille, Mons and Charleroi. Re-join E40 at Liege briefly then E42 again southbound towards Prum. Then head for the ring via the B410 and then B257. (there's also the choice to head for the B258 from Prum also - slightly longer route).

This will totally bypass the nightmare of the Brussels ring road.

But as pointed out in posts above there are umerous routes, most of them are quite scenic when you come off the motorways.

Thanks all - took the usual E42 (Wheeltorque based) route - plain sailing all the way with no roadworks.

Does anyone have a good route from Francorchamps to the Ring? I know there is a cafe just by the Spa circuit, and I think thats at Francorchamps. It would be much nicer to to drivre through the Ardennes/Eifel region, and I just wondered if anyone has anice route. or does anyone know a particularly nice bar/cafe near the Spa circuit which we could stop at en route?

Am going next weekend. Any other PHers going?

DO NOT GO VIA BRUSSELS!!! its the M25!

south loop (lille road) verviers to spa, via prum to the ring.
then go "off piste" as and when. the 258 is cool anyway but there are two cameras!

have fun

Have a look on the map for a place called Malmedy, you can 'cut across' from the 258 to Spa this way IIRC.

About 220mi total.

I've seen it suggested to take the A15 east to Nijmegen then come down the A73 to Venlo rather than going via Breda, Tilburg, Eindhoven. I don't think it would make much difference
