Nürburgring Webcam
Discussion
I see they've finally got a webcam going at the 'ring. Positioned just above the start barriers looking down the final straight.

Its the (proper) German spelling variant of the word.
Apparently its difficult for non-germans to pronounce properly, but to have a go break it up into 3 chunks backwards:
RING (as in ring)
BORG (as in Star Trek)
NURE (as in the word 'pure')
.. and then put it back together forwards.
I don't know - I've only just learnt how to say Fuchrohre (dunno where those 2 dots are on my keyboard!)!!

Don't wish to seem obnoxious, but it's "Fuchsrohre" with an "s", and technically the "o" in it also has the two dots (umlaut) above it.
Would you not say that the point (no pun intended) of the umlaut is to differentiate the pronunciation of two types of "u" (or 'o')?
I think that mmm-five is closer to the mark (again no pun intended!). If the spelling were "Nurburg" without the umlaut, the two "u"s should rhyme with each other and with "sure". With umlaut or as "Nuerburg", pronunciation is a blend of the vowel sounds of "pour" and "fewer".

You have no idea how long it took me to get the 'ü' in the title - I was using a Mac at the time. Ended up having to search for a previous post so I could copy/paste!
alt-u u = ü
alt-u U = Ü
All very easy on a Mac. I bet you don't even know where the n-dash [–] and m-dash [—] are either

Your right, I have no idea. And, try as I might, I cannot get the @ sign and " to swap!

O/T, but check to m,ake sure that you are using English(UK), rather then English(US) as the language seting. If these are reversed on a PC, the the @ and " swap places as you describe!
Umlaut me up!
What do you get when you press SHIFT-2 on your keyboard - and what symbol is displayed above 2 on the keyboard.
It may be that you are using a PC keyboard on a Mac.
The SHIFT-2 combo should give you an @ and to get the " you need to press SHIFT-'
Always been that way on Macs - it's the PC that got it wrong
There is a solution posted elsewhere on the interwebby - I'll see if I can remember where (something like www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20010508131542947&query=keyboard+mapping may have a clue as well).

That's pretty much it; here's the science bit:
An umlaut is used for syllabification, not specifically pronunciation. I.E. the letter "u" is being split into two syllables: a "u" and a "schwa" (the phonetic symbol for which is an upside-down "e", prenonunced "er" ), hence:
"ü" is pronounced "oo-er"
and
"ö" is pronounced "aw-er"
Proper phonetic symbols would be useful here, but that basically explains it.
